Compensation Annual Pay Range: $80,869.32 - $103,558.83 Hourly Pay Range: $38.88 - $49.79 Step 2: $38.88 Step 3: $40.82 Step 4: $42.99 Step 5: $45.11 Step 6: $47.42 Step 7: $49.79 Experience as a deputy or police officer: 18-24 months: Step 2 24-36 months: Step 3 36-48 months: Step 4 48-60 months: Step 5 60+ months: Step 6 Job Details and Qualifications The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office is seeking experienced, highly motivated, self-directed candidates with strong communication and interpersonal skills for the position of Deputy Sheriff. Required Minimum Qualifications / Transferrable Skills Must be currently or have been certified as a basic police officer for at least 18 months within the last 5 years. Must be at least 21 years of age by date of hire. Must be a United States citizen or be within 18 months of hire. Must be free from criminal convictions other than minor traffic violations. Experience thinking clearly and performing effectively in stressful or emergency situations. Experience communicating effectively, both orally and in writing. Must possess a high school diploma or GED, or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Must pass the Frontline exam through National Testing Network (unless currently DPSST certified or possess a bachelor's degree or higher). Visual and Hearing Acuity meeting Department standards as detailed in OARs. Must be able to be certified as a Civilian Police Officer/Deputy by the Department. Must meet the Minimum Standards for Employment as a Law Enforcement Officer per OARs. Must meet the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office tattoo policy. Must successfully pass an extensive background investigation, including national fingerprint records check. Must successfully pass an extensive post-offer pre-employment occupational medical exam and psychological evaluation. Must successfully pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record while employed. Preferred Special Qualifications / Transferrable Skills Knowledge of State and County criminal and traffic laws. Knowledge of police methods and procedures. Knowledge of laws governing arrest, search and seizure, criminal justice system. Knowledge of police investigative procedures and techniques. Experience properly utilizing police equipment and techniques, including firearms and restraining devices. Experience conducting investigations, collecting, evaluating and analyzing facts to draw correct conclusions. Experience driving an automobile in various weather conditions and in high speed pursuits. Testing and Selection Process Step 1: Pass/Fail Minimum Qualifications – Applicants must meet minimum qualifications and be certified as a basic police officer for at least 18 months within the last 5 years. Step 2: Department ("in house") interview – Candidates who pass Step 1 will be invited to a department interview. Step 3: Statement of Personal History, testing (or proof of degree) and other post‑offer tests – Successful interviewees will complete the SPH, Frontline test if required, and other required tests. Step 4: Background Investigation – Qualified candidates will undergo a background investigation and may be required to complete post‑offer physical, psychological, and drug testing. Typical Tasks Patrol county roads, highways, business and residential areas; enforce traffic and criminal codes; patrol rivers and lakes in patrol boat; enforce water safety; check property security; investigate road and safety hazards. Conduct investigations of reported criminal activity; respond to citizen complaints; gather and process crime scene evidence; interview victims, witnesses and offenders; investigate traffic accidents; provide first aid; call ambulances and tow trucks. Make arrests and transport offenders to jail; transport prisoners and patients under custody to institutions and courts; book prisoners. Prepare reports of investigated disturbances, crimes, accidents, traffic enforcement for departmental, court and state use; maintain accurate records; serve legal papers and warrants; appear in court as a witness. Key Competencies Knowledge of State and County criminal and traffic laws, police methods, and investigative procedures. Ability to use police equipment and techniques, including firearms. Ability to conduct investigations, collect, evaluate and analyze facts. Driving in various weather conditions and high speed pursuits. Understanding and following oral and written orders; dealing with the public tactfully and firmly. Clear thinking and effective performance in stressful or emergency situations. Maintain accurate and complete records. Work Schedule Patrol Division: Four-day work week, ten-hour days (POA contract language cites exceptions). Benefits Information 11.7 hours of vacation accrual per month Eligible newly hired employees may frontload first year vacation accruals. 8 hours sick-time accrual per month 10 paid holidays and 2 personal days per year Other Benefits Public Employees Retirement System (PERS)/Oregon Public Service Retirement Plan (OPSRP) Employer-paid 6% PERS retirement contribution. OPSRP members vest after five years or age 65. Employer-paid 4% Deferred Compensation Employer-paid 3.5% to Medical Trust Choice of medical plans including chiropractic, alternative care, vision and prescription coverage.
