Unit Support Associate/Patient Sitter - PICU

Position Overview This unit support associate works full‑time 8‑12 hour shifts rotating night and day with every other weekend under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The role provides direct 1:1 observation of patients, supports unit supplies, and ensures patient safety and care. Responsibilities Maintain environmental safety through room sweep and checklist. Adhere to pediatric safety principles such as use of handrails, seat belts, and direct observation. Never leave a patient unattended. Intervene quickly to calm, redirect, reorient patients or guide them to prevent harm. Remain in patient room unless relieved by nurse or another unit support associate. Accompany patient for any procedures off the unit. Engage patients in distracting, age‑appropriate activities and conversations, providing behavioral reinforcement. Assist with linen changes, room stocking, and activities of daily living including washing, toileting, position changes, and meal assistance. Maintain universal precautions and provide breaks as directed by the Charge Nurse. Keep rooms clean, maintain a calm environment, and stock unit supplies as directed. Monitor common areas for cleanliness, stock levels, and report safety hazards. Perform a variety of unit support activities such as room setup, answering call bells, and customer service tasks. Report pertinent patient information and call for assistance if destructive behaviors occur. Establish priorities with RN and communicate regularly about duties and patient behavior. Immediately report escalating behaviors and seek clarification when needed. Ensure information sharing when handing off to new safety attendant. Education High School Diploma or GED (Required). Required Skills & Knowledge Basic computer skills. Knowledge of child development. Licenses & Certifications Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) (Required).
