Job Description

The Engineering Technician supports a dynamic research laboratory by conducting safety and environmental inspections, managing chemical and waste handling activities, and maintaining safety equipment and inventory. This role helps ensure a safe, compliant, and well-organized lab environment while working closely with research and operations staff in an innovative, non-manufacturing setting.

Responsibilities

• Carry out regular safety and environmental inspections for items such as secondary containment, fire extinguishers, safety showers, chemical storage areas, and laboratory equipment.
• Perform environmental compliance checks to help ensure adherence to internal procedures and applicable regulations.
• Assist with waste management by collecting samples from waste containers and preparing them for review and processing.
• Submit and review waste-related paperwork to support proper documentation and regulatory compliance.
• Prepare and organize waste containers for collection, storage, and disposal according to established procedures.
• Label chemicals and waste accurately and maintain up-to-date records for inventory and tracking.
• Manage inventory of chemicals, waste containers, and related supplies, including purchasing support and storage organization.
• Maintain safety equipment in good working order, including routine checks and coordination of repairs or replacement as needed.
• Use MS Word and Excel to document inspections, track inventory, maintain logs, and generate basic reports.
• Apply troubleshooting and critical thinking skills to identify safety or environmental issues and propose practical solutions.
• Collaborate with laboratory and research personnel to promote safe work practices and proper chemical handling.
• Lift and move containers, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds as part of daily duties.

Essential Skills

• Hands-on experience with laboratory safety practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of chemical safety and safe handling of chemicals in a lab or similar environment.
• Familiarity with safety and environmental inspections, including secondary containment, fire extinguishers, safety showers, and chemical storage.
• Understanding of environmental compliance principles as they relate to laboratory operations.
• Proficiency with MS Word and Excel for documentation, tracking, and reporting.
• Ability to perform troubleshooting and apply critical thinking to resolve issues related to safety, equipment, and processes.
• Capability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds safely.
• Attention to detail and accuracy in labeling, documentation, and inventory management.
• Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks such as inspections, waste handling, and inventory control.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working with chemical processes or in a role such as lab technician is a plus.
• Experience in a laboratory, research, or technical environment is beneficial.
• Familiarity with health and safety principles and best practices in a lab or industrial setting.
• Comfort working with inspection tools, safety equipment, and basic laboratory apparatus.
• Effective communication skills to work with cross-functional teams and convey safety-related information clearly.

Work Environment

This role operates in a research and laboratory environment rather than a manufacturing setting. The work involves regular presence in labs and associated support areas where chemicals, safety equipment, and research instruments are used. The position requires adherence to established safety protocols, use of appropriate personal protective equipment, and careful handling of chemicals and waste materials. Work typically involves standing, walking, and lifting containers or equipment up to 50 pounds. The environment is collaborative and innovation-focused, supporting scientific and technical projects while maintaining a strong emphasis on health, safety, and environmental responsibility.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of San Antonio, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
