The Need

The Position
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide voice to sign and sign to voice interpreting and other support services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in a variety of settings to facilitate communications between students, faculty, staff, administrators and others.
The Candidate
Education and experience: Requires an Associate's degree in a sign language interpreter training program, deaf studies or a related area. Requires one year of experience providing sign-to-English (expressive skills) and English-to-sign (receptive skills) interpreting in one or more sign systems/languages. Additional related experience in an academic or similar environment may be substituted for some higher education based on two years of experience for one year of college.
Licenses and other requirements: By July 1, 2009 and thereafter, certified by the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) OR Have achieved a score of 4.0 or above on the:
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) OR
- Educational Sign Skills Evaluation-Interpreter and Receptive (ESSE-I/R) OR
- National Association of the Deaf/American Consortium of Certified Interpreters (NAD/ACCI) assessment.
Valid California driver's license.
The Details
Testing information: The examination process may be comprised of multiple choice exam, performance assessment, computer skills exam, or any combination of assessment appropriate to determine technical ability to perform the duties listed in the job description.
Step 1: Application Screening (pass/fail) Applications will be screened for minimum qualifications. Applications will be evaluated and ranked according to criteria that most closely meets the needs of the department, so it is essential that applicants provide as much detail as possible and answer all parts of the application, including work experience and the supplemental questionnaire.
Step 2: Performance Examination (weighted 50%) to be determined. Applicants will work through receptive and expressive skill exercises which simulate the tasks that an Education Sign Language Interpreter is expected to perform. Applicants must pass the performance skills examination to move forward to the next step, (qualifications appraisal interview).
Step 3: Qualification Appraisal Interview (weighted 50%) to be determined. All applicants must achieve a passing score in each part of the examination process in order to be placed on the eligibility list.
Additional salary information: New hires – initial salary placement. The District has established criteria in place that recognizes the education and experience new employees bring to their role in supporting students and the services of the District. Upon approval of the Director of Classified Human Resources, a new employee may be provided with advanced step placement up to Step 5 based on the following criteria:
- Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class (limited to no more than one step for each two years of experience related to the classification)
- Additional education at the college level beyond the educational requirements established for entry into the class (limited to no more than one step for each two years of education related to the position)
All new hires placed at Step 1 of the salary schedule will advance to Step 2 after successfully completing the six-month probationary period.
Longevity increments are offered based on years of service with the District: an additional 1.20% of base salary after completing 4 years of service, 4.10% at 9 years, 7.08% at 14 years, 10.15% at 19 years, 13.31% at 24 years, 16.46% at 29 years.
Promotional and/or transfer candidates will be placed at the appropriate step in accordance with established Personnel Commission Rules & Regulations.
Education incentives: All active, regular classified employees are eligible for an education incentive if they possess a college degree above and beyond the stated minimum qualifications for their classification.
- AA/AS = 2.50%
- BA/BS = 4.00%
- MA/MS = 5.00%
- Ed.D./Ph.D/JD = 6.00%

- Cash-in-Lieu option: Full-time employees (40 hours per week) who can prove they are covered by group medical coverage, may opt out of benefits to participate in Cash in Lieu at any time of the year (up to $5,000 per year, paid out in increments of $500 per month (September – June))
Approximately 14 paid holidays per year. Vacation is earned based on assigned hours. (For example: a new employee working 8 hours/day, 12-months per year will earn one vacation day per month, up to a total of twelve (12) days of vacation per year. Employees who work less than 12-months per year or less than 8 hours/day shall be entitled to a prorated share of vacation benefits as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.) Vacation earned increases with years of service with the district. Sick leave is provided for 1 day of illness leave per month worked, with unlimited accumulation for unused days. Retirement is provided through Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and Social Security.
