Job Summary The position of Police Officer is a regular, and/or specialdetail position, providing general law enforcement andservice-related duties for the Georgia College & StateUniversity community. To perform these duties, employees in thisposition must possess, or be able to obtain, and maintain,certification as a peace officer, pursuant to the rules of theGeorgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council. Work involves knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, inaddition to policies and procedures of the Board of Regents of theState of Georgia, Georgia College & State University, and thedepartment of Public Safety. Employees assigned to this positionmust be able to demonstrate the ability to exercise independentjudgment and decision making within the limits prescribed by laws,rules, regulation, policies, and procedures. Work requires professionalism in protecting and safeguardingcommunities, which is often accompanied by emotional and/orphysical stress from rapidly evolving events. Responsibilities Patrol - 50 - Conduct routine vehicle, foot, bicycle, and alternative patrol ofGeorgia College & State University properties, and thesurrounding area pursuant to statutory jurisdictions. - Patrol shall facilitate the detection and deterrence of crime,criminal activity, and suspicious activity for Georgia College& State University properties. - Respond to calls of service and assist as needed. - Investigate accidents, crimes and other complaints. - Issue Citations. - Direct traffic and assist stranded motorists by providing unlocksand/or jumpstarts. Law Enforcement - 15 - This position requires employees to utilize sound discretion anddecision making skills when determining appropriate responses toviolations of federal, state, local, and traffic laws. - Arrest, process, and transport suspects accused of violatinglaws. - Appear and testify in campus judicial and court hearings asneeded. Reporting - 5 Provide adequate documentation of public safety actions, includingthe authoring of incident reports, arrest and booking reports, useof force reports, supplemental reports, traffic citations, andother documents related to safety and security initiatives oncampus. - Such documentation may include written reports, diagrams,sketches, and other representations of reportedcircumstances. Safety and Security Activities - 15 - Perform relevant safety and security functions that enhancepublic safety within the Georgia College & State Universitycommunity. - Such functions include: developing positive police-communityrelations, facilitating the physical security of campus properties,the performance of first-aid in response to medical distress, theenhancement of emergency response to a variety of natural andman-made hazards. - Assist other law enforcement agencies as needed andrequested. - Work special events including sporting events, social events,parades and large gatherings. - Follow departmental safety and risk management policies inperformance of work. - Maintain, repair and clean tools, equipment and work areas. Communications - 10 Effectively communicate with other departmental personnel in thefield, and as a reserve communications officer in the GeorgiaCollege & State University communications center. Other - 5 Perform other duties as assigned Required Qualifications Educational Requirements Must possess a high school diploma or accredited GEDequivalent Other Required Qualifications Must be able to successfully pass a comprehensive background check,pursuant to the regulations of Georgia College & StateUniversity, the Board of Regents Police Guidebook andrecommendations from the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.Requirements will include, at a minimum: an oral interview, a stateand federal criminal history check, a nationwide sex offendersearch, a social security number check, a credit history check, amedical examination, a drug screening, a psychological screening, apolygraph examination, an employment history check, and theverification of at least three professional/personalreferences. Must possess a valid driver's license, or the ability to obtain avalid driver's license. Must possess, or be able to obtain and maintain certification as apeace officer pursuant to the rules of the Georgia Peace OfficerStandards and Training Council (said rules may be found at Required Experience Must have 2 years of work history, not necessarily in a relatedfield, OR a combination of educational attainment and workhistory Preferred Qualifications Preferred EducationalQualifications - Attainment of an Associate's Degree from an accredited college oruniversity. - Certification as a peace officer pursuant to the rules of theGeorgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council. Preferred Experience Experience in a higher education environment. Proposed Salary $24.52 / hour ($51,000) Required Documents to Attach Cover Letter Resume / CV List of References Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities ABILITIES - The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, including for thepurposes of emergency response. -The ability to walk, run, jump, navigate a variety of terrains,and sit or stand for prolonged periods of time. - The ability to perform arrests, forcibly, if necessary andreasonable, requiring proficiency in the use of handcuffs, otherphysical restraints, defensive tactics, less lethal andintermediate weapons, and firearms. - The ability to handle situations firmly, courteously andtactfully, with respect for the rights of others. - The ability to physically check buildings, and lock or unlockfacilities as needed to support the operations of theuniversity. - The ability to develop and maintain positive police-communityrelations. - The ability to speak about crime prevention, awareness, andeducation to a variety of campus audiences. - The ability to react quickly and calmly under emergencyconditions. - The ability to perform rescue and evacuation functions duringaccidents, emergencies, and disasters, to include traffic controland direction, removing persons from dangerous situations, andfacilitating the evacuation of campus facilities. - The ability to use radio systems to dispatch and receive callsfor service. KNOWLEDGE - Knowledge of standard police practices andtechniques. -Knowledge of university properties, buildings, population, and thesurrounding environment. - Knowledge and understanding of departmental policies andprocedures. -Knowledge of federal, state, local, and traffic laws. - Knowledge of case law governing law enforcement tactics and theuse of force. -Knowledge of criminal procedure, search and seizure, and rules ofevidence. -Knowledge and understanding of departmental policies andprocedures. - Familiarity with common workplace technology and office relatedsoftware. - Familiarity with ARMS or records management equivalents. - Knowledge of fire prevention and suppression techniques. - Knowledge of GCIC operations. SKILLS - Effective verbal and written communication skills. - Skill in furnishing first aid in the event of an accident,illness, injury, and use of force situations, to include CPR andthe use of an AED.
