Summary Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager (or designee), implements, supervises, and evaluates the nursing care of each patient using a nursing process and in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. From admission to discharge, plans with consideration of the aging process throughout the life span, including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns. Responsibilities Provides direct patient care. Provides leadership by delegating, supervising, and participating in safe nursing care activities provided by ancillary personnel. Evaluates effectiveness of patient care and identifies opportunities for improvement. Collaborates with the healthcare team, patient, family and community services regarding patient care outcomes and discharge planning. Assesses and provides appropriate teaching based on patient and family needs. Participates in unit-based quality improvement and research activities. Utilizes all available resources to provide quality, cost‑effective patient care. Meets and maintains clinical competencies measured by predetermined credentialing standards, mandatory/safety education, and completion of Basic Life Support and ACLS/PALS as appropriate. Identifies growth needs and participates in educational opportunities and professional organizations. Serves as a role model/preceptor to new graduate nurses and less experienced personnel. Assumes charge nurse responsibility for the patient care unit as delegated. Competencies Wanding – Personal belongings confiscated, itemized, and secured; paper, scrubs, hospital socks. Intake process – Processing patients before going into unit. Vital signs, Breathalyzer/Blood glucose as needed. Unit safety – Suicide precautions, risk assessment, patient location checks every 15 minutes, limiting visitors, contraband checks, environmental checks every 2 hours. Education – D‑pod Net Learning Modules, Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Training, Competency Testing (Wanding, Safety/Environmental Rounds, BLS). Minimum Qualifications Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure under the Nurse Licensure Compact. Current RN license in Rhode Island; Baccalaureate in Nursing preferred. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns. Receive NIHSS Certification within 3 months of hire; 8 hours of continuing stroke education required annually. Unit Specific Job Requirements BSN preferred; Certified Wound Nurse preferred (American Board of Wound Management, Certified Wound Specialist, or Certified Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse). Minimum two years clinical experience in medical‑surgical nursing, ambulatory or surgical services in a hospital setting; previous high‑volume clinic experience preferred. Positive, caring, and customer‑service–oriented attitude. Work Environment and Physical Requirements Visual and aural ability to monitor patient status. Physical ability to assist in lifting and positioning patients, extensive walking and standing, and frequent interruptions. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. Full range of body motion; close, distance, and color vision; clear speech and hearing. Ability to stand, sit, walk, bend, lean, and squat for long periods; maintain dexterity with carts and stretchers. Physically capable of performing CPR. Perform all physical job duties accurately in a fast‑paced environment.
