Nursing Supervisor

The primary purpose of this position is to directly supervise charge nurses and team leaders. Supervises nursing assistants. Works Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. Supports and enhances the philosophy of the nursing department. Creates a harmonious work environment and maintains effective communication within the nursing department and other departments for problem-solving and information updating. Promotes an atmosphere that is sensitive and responsive to the needs of staff, residents, and families. Serves as a clinical resource person to nurse managers, charge nurses, and staff in problem-solving, development of nursing care plans, and resident assessments. Assumes clinical duties as charge or staff nurse as indicated. Complies with regulatory agencies and follows policies and procedures. Promotes and facilitates the implementation of policies on units. Responsible for communicating pertinent resident, staff, and facility information to the oncoming supervisor. Promotes continuity of care and compliance with comprehensive care plans for residents. Coordinates appropriate emergency care, intervention, and transportation of residents, collaborating with the primary physician and nursing administration. Updates administration on facility and resident concerns or problems as needed. Assumes responsibility for professional growth and development and promotes staff development. Takes responsibility for nursing department operations in the absence of the Director of Nursing (DON) or Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON), coordinating with administration as appropriate. Completes short and long-term staffing needs for nursing to ensure adequate and safe staffing for all units, communicating changes as per policy. Reviews staffing and ensures adherence to minimum standards, canceling agency staff as necessary. Participates in the development, promotion, interpretation, and implementation of standards of care. Monitors and follows up on abnormal lab test results and coordinates interventions with Nurse Practitioners or Medical Doctors and nurse managers. Serves on committees as requested. Coordinates with nursing staff regarding resident admissions and discharges and assists staff as needed. Provides input on nursing personnel performance. Assists administration with resident and staff investigations. Monitors personnel attendance and counsels staff, maintaining contact with DON and nurse managers. Respects confidentiality of residents, departments, and information. Follows safety rules and procedures. Reports safety hazards and unsafe acts and takes corrective actions. Follows up on all incidents and accidents, completing reports per policy and notifying appropriate parties. Utilizes personal protective equipment and follows infection control policies and procedures. Assists nurse managers with MDS and PRI documentation. Assists with nursing staff orientation as needed and makes recommendations to staff development coordinators and Human Resources. Performs additional job-related duties as necessary within scope of responsibility. Performs other duties as assigned.
