We’re hiring a Respiratory Therapist (CRT) for the Respiratory Care Services department for a Full‑Time, Day shift at the University of Chicago Medicine main campus in Hyde Park, Chicago, IL. Open positions support either Adult or Pediatric/Neonatal patient populations. Student opportunities are available for those enrolled in a Respiratory Therapy program. Job Summary The certified Respiratory Therapist administers respiratory care treatments, procedures, and protocols under department leadership and physician supervision. Responsibilities include patient assessment, implementing care protocols, and maintaining/improving cardiopulmonary status. The role also initiates and maintains emergent and non‑emergent non-invasive ventilation and invasive mechanical ventilation per department policies. Essential Job Functions Administer supplemental oxygen/medical gas therapy as prescribed and document procedures accurately in EPIC. Administer intermittent or continuous medication delivery therapy (bronchodilators, steroids, mucolytics, etc.) and document procedures in EPIC in real time. Perform bronchopulmonary hygiene, suctioning, and airway care procedures; employ airway clearance techniques (chest physiotherapy, coughing, incentive spirometry, Therapy Vest, Flutter valve, EzPap device, Acapella device, etc.) as per protocols. Initiate and maintain non‑invasive ventilation (NIV) procedures (BIPAP, CPAP, High Flow Cannula), assessing patient status and equipment, adjusting for comfort and benefit, and documenting in EPIC. Initiate, maintain, and check status of mechanical ventilation; conduct thorough assessments to recommend and implement weaning plans per physician order or established ventilator protocols, documenting in EPIC. Provide ventilator management (NIV and mechanical ventilation) and hemodynamic monitoring/reporting of patient parameters; document accurately and timely in EPIC. Perform arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis per hospital, department, and accrediting agency guidelines; troubleshoot, calibrate ABG analyzers, and report results accurately and timely. Coordinate patient transport within the facility, ensuring oxygen delivery or mechanical ventilator support during transfers. Required Qualifications Graduate of an approved and accredited Respiratory Care Program (≥2 years). Diploma or Certificate of Completion and Associate’s Degree from an accredited academic body. Proof of effective and accurate communication and documentation skills. Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care. Registered Respiratory Therapist Credential (RRT) from the NBRC within 180 days of hire. License as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in Illinois. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred, dependent on patient population.
