Job Summary
1. Van Drivers are responsible for transporting students over scheduled routes and/or to/from special excursions in an agency vehicle; ensuring vehicle operation is in a safe operating condition; ensuring safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from vans and assisting with routine agency deliveries and or transports if needed.
2. They exercise responsibility for operation of the vehicles.
3. Van Drivers should have a basic knowledge of the role and purpose of nonprofit organizations and have a clear understanding of the agency’s mission and work.
4. The Van Drivers must present a professional appearance and represent the agency to the community at large.
5. The Van Drivers must be able to engage with others in a customer service mindset and provide all clients with peace of mind for student safety.
The following describes the general nature of work to be performed but is not an exhaustive list. The Board of Directors reserves the right to revise the duties and responsibilities of this position at any time at its sole discretion.
Duties and Responsibilities
Client Transportation
1. Ensures passenger safety as a top priority.
2. Drives agency vans for the purpose of transporting students, including disabled students, over scheduled routes and to/from the agency and/or field trips in a safe, courteous and timely manner.
3. Abide by speed limits and practice defensive and safe driving habits at all times.
4. Instructs and assists students and other passengers (e.g., seating, restraints, special equipment, etc.) for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from vehicles including both emergency situations and normal transport.
5. Ensures transportation routes are made as scheduled.
6. Consistent with agency policies, assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation.
7. Informs agency supervisor, parents/alternate caregivers, etc. of practices and incidents (e.g., rules, regulations, laws, procedures, suspicious situations, etc.) for the purpose of providing information for follow-up action and/or proper procedures.
8. Never leave passengers on van unsupervised.
9. Ensure the safety and welfare of students entering or exiting the van by positioning
the van to ensure they do not have to cross the street to board the van or
access their home.
10. Never leave a child’s home until they enter the door of their home.
11. Monitors passengers during transit for the purpose of maintaining order and
ensuring the safety of passengers.
12. Count the number of students getting on the van and exiting the vans and check the
vehicle at the end of the route to ensure no children are left on the van.
13. Performs first aid as necessary for the purpose of meeting the immediate health
care needs of passengers.
14. Responsible for responding appropriately in any disaster or potentially dangerous
situation and maintaining student safety above all.
Other Duties
1. Maintains client confidentiality.
2. Maintains a respect, understanding and competence for client cultural differences and socioeconomic diversity as well as race, gender/gender identity, language and other differences.
3. Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g., fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, windshield wipers, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and meeting state requirements. Performs weekly inspections of overall vehicle safety and reports any problems to supervisor.
4. Must report any maintenance problems to supervisor immediately and never operate an unsafe vehicle.
5. Fuels assigned vehicle (e.g., oil, water, fuel, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining vehicle in a safe operating condition.
6. Prepares vehicle for inclement weather conditions including scraping and cleaning windows, mirrors, etc.
7. Completes all required paperwork including but not limited to, route change sheets, timecards, and vehicle repair requests.
8. Recommends routes to supervisor for the purpose of coordinating routes and maximizing the agency’s transportation services.
9. Communicates with parents, students, teachers, administrators, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information.
10. Maintains assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior (e.g., cleaning floors/windows/seats, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicle.
11. Immediately reports all accidents involving the vehicle, personal injury or property damage to immediate supervisor. Prepares documentation (e.g., daily mileage and condition reports, incident/accident reports, inspections, disciplinary and positive behavior reports, mileage, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
12. Collaborates with and assists other staff as required or directed by supervisor.
13. Maintain effective and timely communication, both verbal and written, with the supervisor and other staff as appropriate.
14. Establish and maintain program quality and professionalism at all times.
Professional Development
1. Attends meetings, trainings, etc. for the purpose of maintaining skills and meeting agency requirements.
2. Must maintain up to date first aid training by certified agency/instructor.
3. Must maintain safety and disaster preparedness and skills for responding in dangerous situations to maintain student and passenger safety.
Personnel
1. Complies with program policies and guidelines. Reviews and follows the Employee Handbook and if additional clarification is needed, takes the initiative to ask for additional information or direction.
2. Works collaboratively with other agency staff.
Qualifications
Education
1. High School diploma or equivalent. Experience Job related experience is desired.
2. Current knowledge of vehicle maintenance and operation.
3. Current knowledge of first aid, disaster preparedness and passenger/student safety.
Experience
1. A minimum of one (1) year of experience working in a similar position, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
2. Computer (including word processing, spreadsheets, data base management, and social media literacy.
3. Demonstrated leadership and initiative in implementing a program.
4. Able to exercise situational decision-making skills.
5. Experience in writing and preparing reports is essential.
6. Demonstrated dependability.
7. Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of people, developing and maintaining rapport with the supervisor, other staff, students, caregivers, staff at partner agencies, and others.
1. Understanding of basic workplace behavior.
2. Ability to understand the program and mission of the organization.
3. Ability to continuously work within the program to promote the organization’s mission and helps it achieve its goals.
4. Ability to support an environment that promotes innovation, accomplishment, accountability and transparency for students and parents/caregivers.

Special Requirements
1. Must provide Criminal Background Check, Michigan and National Sex Offender Registry Check and Central Registry check with the Department of Health and Human Services before hire.
2. Must be able to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends as determined by the program schedule.

4. Valid Michigan driver’s license and proof of current automobile insurance
5. DMV printout (clean driving record)
6. Must pass background check (federal, state, including DHS Central Registry)
7. Specified Valid Class A or B Driver’s License with CDL chauffeur’s license.
8. Current Medical Certificate, Medical Certificate renewal every 2 years
9. First Aid/CPR, maintenance of First Aid Certification
10. Pre-employment Medical Examination.
11. Pre-employment Proficiency Test
12. Physical Capacities Test Required
13. Drug Screening including potential intermittent testing
14. Regularly required to sit, stand and walk for long periods of time
15. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
16. Must be able to assist passengers on and off vehicle, including evacuation in an emergency.
17. Routinely works in an office environment; normal levels of sound in the workplace, with natural and artificial lighting.
18. Must have a means of communicating (cell phone) with the Student Services Manager or other designated staff at Motherly Intercession.
19. Must be willing to travel as required for program activities and or agency business etc.
