Vehicle Technician I (Mechanic Helper)

The Job Shifts available: Swing Shift and Graveyard Shift only. Shifts (swing/graveyard) and divisions (San Bernardino/Montclair) assigned based on seniority. Example of Duties Service vehicles by changing oil and oil filters, lubricate chassis. Inspect vehicles for such defects as damaged or worn exhaust systems, leaking hoses, leaks in seals, pinion and rear axle seals, faulty wheel bearings, defective vehicle lighting, brakes, windshield wipers and glass, and make necessary repairs. Remove and replace radiators, radiator hoses, fan belts, water pumps, batteries, battery cables, alternators, voltage regulators, starters, and various other components. Inspect and replace wheel bearings, brake linings and pads, springs and all brake hardware as required. Replace fuses, mirrors and head, tail, clearance and parking lights, adjust doors, windows and hoods. Keep record of work performed, parts used and time worked. Assist Equipment Mechanic in higher level mechanical procedures. Work with CNG, Battery Electric and Fuel Cell Electric buses. Perform equipment inspections. Other duties may be assigned. Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or equivalent and one or more years’ experience and/or formalized training in the servicing, maintenance and repair of light and heavy automotive and mechanical equipment. Knowledge Basic vehicular mechanics; minor repairs and adjustment procedures. Safe working practices related to all assigned job duties. Ability Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Perform basic arithmetic calculations. Basic computer skills. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Read and understand policies, procedures and Agency regulations. Obtain and maintain a valid Class B California Motor Vehicle Operator's License with passenger endorsements. Tools Must provide all necessary tools up to "drive". Special Conditions Positions in this job classification are considered safety-sensitive and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations.
