Mechanic

POSITION TITLE: Mechanic DEPARTMENT: Public Works Department RATE CLASS: Non-Exempt REPORTS TO: Public Works Director SHIFT: 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM, M-F (Non-standard hours may be required) JOB SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Public Works Director the Mechanic performs a dual function as a maintenance repair mechanic of equipment, and vehicles, assists with ordering parts and utilizing the work order system. This position will also diagnose and troubleshoot both diesel and gasoline engines, repair electrical, hydraulic systems, engine repairs and preventative maintenance. Must have knowledge of construction equipment, general knowledge of repairs associated with public works equipment, welding, cutting and metal fabrication. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Licenses/Certifications, & Experience Any combination of education, training, and experience, which provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities needed for this position, may be substituted or evaluated at the discretion of the City. REQUIRED: Education: High school diploma or GED is required. Licenses / Certifications: Requires Texas Driver's License (Class B or higher with a Safe Driving Record), and must be insurable. Automotive Services Excellence (ASE) Certification in heavy equipment and diesel engines or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment. Experience: minimum of (4) years of job-related mechanic experience in automotive and heavy equipment repairs. PREFERRED: Automotive Services Excellence (ASE) Certification in heavy equipment and diesel engines highly desired. Specific Mechanical certifications desired, but not required [i.e. hydraulics, specific engine types or brands, brakes, transmissions, etc.]. Safety training certifications preferred. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: DUTIES & RESPOSIBILITIES: Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on all City heavy equipment and vehicles. This may include maintenance on public safety vehicles. Responds to roadside or field repairs. Conducts new vehicle and equipment check-ins, make-ready and decommissioning operations. Monitors and controls supplies and equipment, assist with ordering parts, supplies and tools as necessary. Maintains requisitions for parts and materials used in the garage such as tires, oil and lubricants and miscellaneous parts. Maintain the mechanic work area and company tools in a safe, secure, clean, and organized manner. Establish and execute preventative maintenance program to ensure that heavy equipment and vehicles are in working condition and safe to utilize on a daily basis. May be required to respond to emergency maintenance requests after hours, and be available for emergency call out, as needed. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. Works closely with other members of the Public Works department and other City teams to provide a coordinated and supportive approach to service delivery. Performs other duties as assigned. SKILLS IN / ABILITY TO: Handling multiple tasks and prioritizing. Using computers and related software, internet and email. Planning and organizing. Use and care of tools, equipment and materials used in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment. Read and understand manuals, plans, drawings and specifications for repair & maintenance under manufacturers' recommendation for troubleshooting. Repairs and troubleshooting of automotive, heavy truck and construction equipment Operating heavy equipment and vehicles. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with supervisors, other City departments, vendors, contractor and general public. Operating a personal computer and various software applications. Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing. KNOWLEDGE OF: Experience with and knowledge of maintenance of heavy equipment and vehicles is required. Knowledge of principles, practices, methods and materials for municipal maintenance projects and activities. Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques related to equipment maintenance. Knowledge of safety practices pertaining to the lines of work. Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Mental: The employee must maintain professional, respectful communications with the general public, co-workers, and supervisors. Must be able to multi-task, prioritize, problem-solve, and work under time-constraints. Must be able to maintain confidentiality and resolve conflicts. This position may require independent judgement and sound decision-making related to maintenance needed in the absence of supervisory direction.
