Position Summary Ensures quality nursing care is rendered to all patients in accordance with the New York Nurse Practice Act, National Standards of Practice, and Nursing and Clinical Service standards of care and practice. Utilizing the Nursing Process, plans, directs and supervises the care of patients in addition to being involved in the provision of direct care of patients and families. Education, Training, Experience, Certification And Licensure Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and current licensure, or eligibility for licensure, in the State of New York. Participates in orientation and continuing education and updates and maintains knowledge and skills related to specific areas of expertise. Special Equipment, Skills Or Other Requirements Maintains current BLS/CPR certification. Work Environment And Hazards Clinical setting. Exposure Class I Physical Demands Medium work: must be able to lift 25 pounds frequently; occasionally lifting maximum of 50 pounds. Will require ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, squat and reach. Work Contact Group All services, medical staff, patients, visitors, and various regulatory and professional agencies. Supervised By Charge nurse, Clinical Coordinator, Unit Manager, and Clinical Services/Nursing Administration. Supervises Other RN’s, LPN’s, Nurse Assistants, Secretaries and Unit Support Aides Career Path Advancement to Level II and Level III after experience and clinical performance demonstrates ability to meet criteria. Advancement to coordinator or management positions if experience and clinical performance demonstrates ability to meet criteria. General Performance Criteria: Registered Nurse Expectations Exceeds Meet Below Clinical Practice Utilizes Nursing Process Demonstrates the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care of designated patient populations. Plans and implements nursing interventions. Plans for disposition of the patient, continually assesses need for appropriate level of care, is proactive in working with health care providers to ensure timely disposition. Collects Data In a Comprehensive Manner Augments initial nursing assessment data with experiential knowledge to refine patient care plan. Integrates verbal and non-verbal behaviors exhibited by patient and significant others to make nursing decisions. Compiles, interprets and incorporates laboratory data into the plan of care of the patient. Performs on-going observational assessment to determine changing priorities. Obtains pertinent information from patients/families, co-workers and other health care providers resources to enhance patient care. Maintains confidentiality related to patients and families. Adheres to hospital confidentiality statement. Demonstrates excellence in clinical practice utilizing established standards Policies And Procedures Adheres to established hospital policy and procedure related to job function. Functions independently with treatments, procedures and equipment. Demonstrates expanded knowledge base as documented on skills inventory. Shares expertise in clinical skills with other team members. Collaborates Using a Multi-disciplinary Approach To Patient Care Recognizes and utilizes the knowledge and expertise of colleagues. Identifies available resources for patients and makes referrals as appropriate. Anticipates And Responds Effectively To Change In Patient Status Initiates proactive nursing interventions which reflect assessment skills that minimize negative outcomes. Follows established protocols. Coordinates resources for effective response. Evaluates nursing interventions in relationship to patient outcomes. Recommends appropriate changes. Promotes And Provides Health Care Teaching Demonstrates effective teaching skills with colleagues, other health care providers and patients/families. Evaluates the effectiveness of teaching and revises appropriately. Documents all teaching, including patient’s/families response. Effectively educates the patient/family in specialty area. Professional And Staff Development Serves as a clinical resource person. Maintains required competencies. Completes mandatory educational activities. Participates in educational opportunities. Maintains own record of continuing education. Participates in clinical supervision. Knows the objectives and expected competencies of orientees and students. Supervision, Delegation And Coordination Supervises the practice and care of LPN’s and other allied health care members. Demonstrates awareness, provides input for unit goal and objective development. Coordinates activities for a designated patient population/unit for a given shift. Identifies and handles unit problems in a professional manner. Presents a positive unit and nursing image when communicating with other departments, services, units and physicians. Seeks guidance when appropriate. Maintains confidentiality related to staff. Adheres to hospital confidentiality statement. Participates in performance improvement. Participates in planning and implementing change. Displays a commitment to the hospital mission. Abides by Personnel policies and procedures. Demonstrates a knowledge and understanding of the National Patient Safety Goals. Researcher Participates in Performance Improvement and Monitoring.
