This position will support the advancement of MCSJ programming with a focus on increasing students’ awareness of social justice issues facing communities and invite participants to critically examine issues locally, nationally and globally. The Program Manager will introduce students to organizations, individuals, and policies aimed at combatting issues of systemic injustice and provide opportunities and resources for continued discourse and learning. In addition to social justice programming locally, this position is responsible for oversight and implementation of the Immersions program and will ensure that national and global immersions are connected to issues occurring locally. This position reports to the Director of the Moreau Center for Service and Justice. Core Duties Develop and manage all aspects of social justice programming on behalf of MCSJ. Supervise 6-8 student Student Leaders who are responsible for leading immersions, and planning campus wide opportunities for engagement through social justice education and service events with a focus on the social justice issues impacting local neighborhoods, including New Columbia, North Portland and Old Town. Manage site partnerships in support of social justice programs which include non-profit organizations, schools and other organizations that host student participants; includes but not limited to, nurturing existing partners, serving as primary point of contact for partners as it relates to students, and support students participating in relevant programs. Support development, planning and day of tasks for social justice related events across campus, including but not limited to National Day of Racial Healing, MLK Day ON and International Women’s Day. Provide support at campus-wide community engagement and service events hosted in collaboration with or by other departments and divisions, including but not limited to MLK Day ON, Homecoming/Family Weekend, Summer WAVE , Weekend on the Bluff, National Day of Racial Healing and International Women’s Day. Work collaboratively with the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and other relevant clubs and campus groups to develop and provide joint opportunities for social justice engagement. Develop and facilitate monthly social justice conversations around a specific theme impacting our local community and communities nationally and globally. Serve as administrator for all social justice events on the Engage and GivePulse platforms, including management and approval of memberships and events. Supervise student employees and any other student leaders assigned to programs supporting social justice education. Supervisory responsibilities for all student positions includes hiring processes, setting of expectations, training and professional development, performance management and evaluations, and disciplinary processes including termination of employment. Oversee the MCSJ’s Immersion and PLUNGE Programs, including but not limited to: Program preparation, participation, and follow-up of immersion experiences, including group seminars and post-immersion reflection and action. Manage fundraising efforts to support immersions. Completion of risk assessments and safety planning for all immersions. Develop pre and post immersion assessments and utilize to assess for trends and data points. Oversee site partnerships for the programs and accompany students on immersion experiences. Transport immersion participants in University vehicles to site locations or facilitate transportation, including airfare for all immersions. Develop and implement a uniform model for critical reflection and dialogue for immersions. Manage immersion program budget and ensure responsible use of funds, including timely payments of partner compensation and student stipends. Manage the three-day Plunge into Your Neighborhood Immersion events that occur pre-orientation. Support the ongoing maintenance of MCSJ webpages, social media, and other digital platforms to ensure accurate and up to date information on programs and opportunities. Assist in all MCSJ marketing and outreach events, including but not limited to creation and distribution of marketing materials, monthly tabling, and attendance at campus wide events to increase student connections and visibility of MCSJ. Contribute to MCSJ department fundraising efforts. Develop relevant and current programming which creatively integrates Catholic Social Teaching ( CST ), anti-oppression framework, anti-racist, and other justice-oriented tools into MCSJ programs. Provide support in data collection, assessment, report compilation, financial reporting, and team planning to ensure department strategic goals and engagement measurements for students and partners are met. Support Director and other MCSJ staff with new projects or initiatives as needed. Participate on campus committees as assigned. Other duties as relevant to the duties of the position or as assigned by supervisor or designee. Education & Experience Required: 2 or more years’ professional experience in one or more of the following areas: social justice, community engaged scholarship, experiential learning community partnerships, student leadership development, community engagement, volunteer coordination, event planning, or non-profit management. Preferred: experience working with students in cocurricular settings. Preferred: demonstrated competency working with people from diverse backgrounds in a culturally competent manner. Preferred: experience with workshop and group facilitation. Preferred: experience with risk assessment and analysis. Preferred: experience supervising interns and/or volunteers. Or a combination of equivalent education, work and/or lived experience. Certifications & Licenses Valid Driver’s License Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Demonstrated ability to build partnerships and develop new programs. Ability to consistently handle and follow through with multiple projects and assignments and meet deadlines. Strong orientation towards taking initiative and ownership of projects and assignments and being proactive with projects, assignments, and process improvements. Strong organizational and time management skills; excellent attention to detail and accuracy. Strong critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, and judgment skills. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills Competence with and commitment to inclusive excellence; ability to be an effective partner with diverse students, faculty, and staff. Ability to establish effective working relationships, professional rapport, and effectively accomplish work within a University setting that includes a wide array of individuals, groups, policies, and processes. Effective ability to use and learn computers, technology, software, and applications at level of sophistication required for the duties of the position, including, without limitation, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), the internet, and computerized maintenance management systems. All University of Portland positions require the ability to quickly learn and use new technologies, software, and applications in depth and at level of proficiency required for duties of the position. In most situations, the necessity of learning, using, and supporting new technologies, software, and/or applications does not change a job description nor make the position one that involves higher level duties. Physical Requirements Frequently: sit, perform desk-based computer tasks; use fine manipulation and grasp; use a telephone; write by hand; sort and file paperwork. Occasionally: stand and walk; twist; lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 25 pounds. Frequently: ability to attend events and activities on or off campus. Frequently: ability to interact and communicate with members of the University and others as necessary. Occasionally: ability to travel by car and airplane (locally and domestically). Frequently: ability to work early mornings, evenings, nights, and weekends on occasion. Working Conditions Hours of employment: sometimes may require working flexible, longer hours, or irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, nights, overnight hours, weekends, and holidays when necessitated by duties of the position. Work-related stress: sometimes there may be stress from work-related situations such as those involving challenging, important, urgent, time-sensitive, or multiple matters. Physical environment: during immersion experiences, work may be in physical environments with less access to health care, sanitation, and the like that may be available on the University of Portland campus. Travel: will need to travel by car and air.
