Acute Inpatient Apheresis Registered Nurse - RN - Dialysis

Location: Piedmont Atlanta Hospital – 1968 Peachtree Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30309 The Apheresis RN spends 80% or more of their time providing Apheresis treatments and direct patient care in accordance with company policies and procedures, including FMCNA compliance programs and contracted hospitals’ policies. Areas of practice include therapeutic plasma exchange, RBC exchange and depletion, PLT and WBC depletions, PBSC and WBC collections, photopheresis, and LDL apheresis. Purpose and Scope The Apheresis RN spends 80% or more of their time providing Apheresis treatments and direct patient care in accordance with company policies and procedures, including FMCNA compliance programs and contracted hospitals’ policies. Principal Duties and Responsibilities General Under limited supervision, applies knowledge to perform a broad range of tasks including direct patient care in multiple modalities such as apheresis. Responsible for direct patient care of assigned patients in hospital or outpatient location, providing appropriate treatment techniques per modality. Performs scheduled, unscheduled and emergency Apheresis treatments and other extra‑corporeal therapies at assigned facilities, establishing priority of care. Initiates, monitors, and discontinues prescribed treatments and medication according to established policies. Gives organized, concise shift reports for assigned patients, applying high level thinking to meet needs of critical patients. Ensures adequate coverage of patient treatments and customer needs through appropriate scheduling. Travels outside regional area as necessary to support coverage of patient treatments. Maintains a safe environment for self, patients and staff by following universal infection control precautions. Maintains current knowledge of therapeutic apheresis advancements by completing LMS modules. Patient Care Assesses patients’ responses to therapeutic apheresis, making appropriate adjustments to treatment plans. Detects mild, moderate and severe complications pre, during and post treatment, notifying appropriate personnel. Implements, administers, monitors, and documents patient responses to therapy, notifying physicians and suppliers of adverse reactions. Delivers safe, effective care in a timely manner; reports incidents, complaints, or problems to managers or hospital personnel. Accurately documents all treatment information in ACES and hospital record. Completes appropriate training programs to deliver varied patient care. Utilizes principles of growth and development to assess patient status and provide recommendations for care plans. Implements physician orders and follows through appropriately. Ensures patient confidentiality. Assists in evacuation of patients during emergency, fire or disaster per policy. Performs equipment preventive maintenance, cleans and disinfects machine surfaces and surrounding areas between treatments. Conducts all tasks necessary for preparation of apheresis treatments or collections and documents appropriately. Sets up, monitors and discontinues use of apheresis equipment, blood warmers and related equipment per SOP. Assists with inventory control per corporate and department policy, manufacturer recommendations and regulatory guidelines. Manages supply inventory efficiently and documents all inventory control. Performs required pre‑treatment machine alarm testing and documents maintenance per policy. Operates related equipment safely and provides troubleshooting when necessary; utilizes supplies to prevent waste. Documents and performs machine safety tests, calibrations, functional tests, internal and external disinfection with proper notification per FMCNA policies. Maintains a safe, neat, and adequately stocked supply and equipment area. Reports all equipment and supply problems to repair personnel. Staff Related Completes and documents ongoing participation in QAI activities. Reports all new or unusual incidents to the Inpatient Program Manager and others per adverse event reporting requirements; may be assigned to other inpatient care as needed. Acts as a resource for other staff members. Participates in staff meetings, mandatory continuing education, training and orientation as assigned. Communicates effectively with physicians, supervisors, hospital staff, coworkers, patients and families. Recognizes and utilizes opportunities for patient and family education specific to needs. Maintains a positive working relationship with all company and hospital staff. Other Reviews and complies with the Code of Business Conduct and all applicable company policies and procedures, local, state and federal laws and regulations. Assists with various projects assigned by direct supervisor. Other duties as assigned. Additional responsibilities may include focus on one or more departments or locations. Requirements include travel between assigned facilities and various community locations. Position requires on‑call rotation: night, day, weekend, and holidays. Work environment characteristic of a health care facility with air temperature control and moderate noise levels. Potential exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials. Position provides direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients and/or equipment >200 lbs with mechanical assistance. Supervision None Education Current appropriate state licensure. Must meet practice requirements in the state of employment. Certification in Apheresis Nursing is highly encouraged. Peripheral vein cannulation abilities preferred. Maintains current knowledge of therapeutic apheresis advancements. Experience and Required Skills One year of RN experience required. One year of Apheresis or ICU/CCU/ED experience preferred. Demonstrated strong assessment skills related to critically ill patients. Successful completion of competency training in theory and practice of therapeutic apheresis and related procedures. BLS CPR Recognition. ACLS CPR Recognition preferred but not required. Demonstrates organizational and time‑management skills, and competency toward completing continuing and ongoing apheresis education. Displays leadership skills and ability to direct and supervise others such as technical or clerical staff. Valid driver’s license.
