Job Overview The role of a Transit Operator is to operate a county passenger bus or van in transporting citizens, senior citizens and/or the physically handicapped on assigned routes and schedules while ensuring passenger safety and compliance with traffic regulations. Work Information Work Location: 2411 Tallevast Road, Sarasota, Florida 34243 Work Hours: Sunday – Saturday, shifts vary from 4:30 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. Pay: $19.51 – $24.38 per hour Application Note: The position will close after 50 applications are received. Essential Functions Apply knowledge of traffic laws, regulations, and county bus routes. Operate a county passenger bus or van, maintaining safety and schedule. Collect fares, issue transfers, provide passenger information, and ensure proper boarding and wheelchair placement. Record operating data daily – mileage, hours, fare readings, passenger counts – and prepare reports. Enforce passenger conduct rules and conduct safety inspections, reporting mechanical or other concerns. Regulate heating, lighting, and ventilating systems for passenger comfort. Report delays or accidents to dispatcher and communicate clearly in writing and orally. Maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers, dispatchers and supervisors. Perform other related duties as assigned, including emergency or disaster response activities. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent. Five (5) years of driving experience or two (2) years of commercial driving experience. Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement, or a Class “B” CDL permit with the same endorsements. Ability to pass the CDL skills test within six weeks with training provided. Pass a DOT physical and Level 2 background check. At least 21 years of age. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Defensive driving skills. Knowledge of Florida traffic laws and Manatee County highways. Skilled safe driving techniques. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English. Ability to adhere to routes, schedules, attendance, and tardiness rules. Basic arithmetic and legible reading and writing.
