Job Title: Construction Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Job Description

This role maintains, repairs, and services heavy construction and demolition equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic inspects machinery, diagnoses complex mechanical and electrical issues, performs repairs and preventive maintenance, and supports both shop and occasional field operations.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect excavators, drills, breakers, semi trucks, and related support equipment for wear, leaks, damage, and performance issues.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems in diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, braking systems, and equipment attachments using diagnostic tools and operator feedback.
  • Perform repairs or replace faulty components, including hydraulic pumps, cylinders, tracks, engines, electrical parts, and brake systems.
  • Carry out routine preventive maintenance such as oil changes, lubrication, filter replacements, fluid checks, and cleaning of machine attachments including winches, blades, and booms.
  • Support equipment used in demolition and drilling operations by providing both shop-based and on-site repair services as needed.
  • Test and verify repaired equipment to confirm safe, proper, and efficient operation before returning it to service.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, parts used, and service history for all assigned equipment.
  • Communicate with equipment operators to understand performance issues, explain repair plans, and coordinate equipment downtime.
  • Follow safety procedures and guidelines while working on heavy equipment in both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Collaborate with other mechanics and shop personnel to prioritize workloads and ensure timely completion of repairs and maintenance.

Essential Skills

  • At least 10 years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic or in a closely related mechanical repair role.
  • Proven experience with excavator repair, including hydraulic and mechanical systems.
  • Hands-on experience with semi truck repair, including engine, brake, and drivetrain systems.
  • Strong experience in diesel engine repair, troubleshooting, and overhaul.
  • Demonstrated ability to repair and maintain hydraulic systems, including pumps, cylinders, and hoses.
  • Working knowledge of electrical systems on heavy equipment, including diagnosis and repair of wiring, sensors, and control components.
  • Experience performing brake repair and maintenance on heavy equipment and trucks.
  • Proficiency in preventive maintenance practices, including scheduled inspections, lubrication, and component replacement.
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to read and interpret technical information and equipment feedback.
  • Valid driver’s license preferred.
  • OSHA 10 certification preferred.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous experience supporting demolition and drilling equipment in a shop or field environment.
  • Comfort working with a variety of attachments such as winches, blades, booms, and other specialized components.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interact with operators and team members.
  • Attention to detail in recordkeeping and documentation of service work.
  • Ability to adapt to varying workloads and adjust to schedule changes when needed.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to established safety procedures and guidelines.

Work Environment

This position operates in both indoor shop and outdoor field settings. Most work takes place at the main shop location, with occasional travel to job sites for on-site repairs. The typical schedule runs from 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with a 40–50 hour workweek that may vary depending on workload. You will work around heavy equipment used in demolition and drilling operations and will regularly handle mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic components. The environment requires adherence to safety practices, use of appropriate personal protective equipment, and readiness to work in varying weather conditions when outdoors.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Overland Park, KS.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
