Postdoctoral Researcher position: Ginger Seed-piece and Soil-borne Diseases

A full‑time Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available at the Agricultural Research Station of Virginia State University (VSU) to conduct research on the identification, characterization and integrated management of major seed‑piece and soil‑borne diseases affecting ginger production and storage. This is a 12‑month, 100% research appointment for one year from the date of hire, renewable for a second year based on satisfactory performance and continued funding availability. The successful candidate will work independently and collaboratively with the Principal Investigator and a multidisciplinary research team, including graduate and undergraduate students. The position also provides opportunities to participate in competitive grant proposal development to support future research initiatives. A competitive post‑doc may also have opportunities for external fellowships, such as: NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowships, USDA NIFA Postdoctoral Fellowships, Fulbright Scholar Programs and more. Duties and Responsibilities Identification and characterization of seed‑piece and soil‑borne diseases (SSDs) impacting indoor and outdoor ginger production. Isolation, microscopic, cultural and molecular detection and characterization of plant pathogens affecting ginger production and storage. Design and execution of laboratory, greenhouse and field experiments focused on integrated disease management strategies. Conduct of statistically sound experimental designs and data analysis using appropriate statistical software (e.g., R, SAS, SPSS, Sigma Plot). Preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer‑reviewed journals. Presentation of research findings at scientific conferences, professional meetings, and grower outreach events. Mentorship of graduate and/or undergraduate students engaged in project activities. Required Qualifications Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, Microbiology, Soil Microbiology, Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Breeding or closely related discipline. Demonstrated experience in laboratory, greenhouse, and field‑based plant pathology research. Excellent skills in microscopy and molecular detection/characterization of plant pathogens. Strong experience working with plants and background in experimental design and statistical data analysis. Evidence of scholarly productivity (e.g., peer‑reviewed publications) and excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team‑oriented research environment, strong attributes to contribute towards an enthusiastic and collegial environment. Preferred Qualifications Experience with phenotypic screening of cultivars for disease resistance, particularly in ginger or related crops. Experience in integrated disease management research.
