Job Description
Registered Nurse (RN) - PCU

Unit Information:

This unit focuses on Medical Oncology with progressive care beds specifically catering to high-acuity patients and a limited number of medical-surgical cases. It features:

• 36-bed Oncology Telemetry unit, with over 24 beds designated for PCU level of care.
• Occasional pediatric patient care, managed primarily by permanent staff. Pediatric experience is not a requirement for agency RNs.

Schedule:

Staff may be scheduled for day or night shifts, or a combination of both, based on the department's needs. Shift assignments are evaluated every 4-week period, but changes are not guaranteed and depend on staffing priorities.

Patient Diagnoses:

• Solid Tumor
• Orthopedic Oncology
• Thoracic Oncology

Special Procedures/Unit Details:

The primary focus is on infection prevention protocols and minimizing patient falls.

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum of 2 years of acute care nursing experience.
• A minimum of 1 year of experience in a progressive care unit (PCU).
• Certifications: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and NIH Stroke Scale.
• Ability to float within units of equivalent or lower acuity levels.
• Preferred: Previous travel nursing experience.

Staffing Ratios:

• 1:4-5 for Medical-Surgical Telemetry
• 1:3 for PCU

Skills Required:

• Interpretation of dysrhythmias
• Utilization of rapid response teams
• Feeding tube care and management
• Accessing ports and blood product administration
• Central and peripheral line care/management, including PICC line management
• Starting IVs and managing cardiac drugs (no titration)
• Managing PCA administration
• Chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
• Non-invasive airway management, including CPAP/BIPAP and High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
• Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)
• Tracheostomy management

Skills Preferred:

• Management of dysrhythmias
• IV insulin protocols and insulin drip titration
• Chemotherapy administration and monitoring
• Wound care and management, including Wound Vac
• Arterial line management
• Surgical drains
