Job Summary The Communications Technician II is responsible for installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining telecommunications systems, serving as a lead for small teams of installers and ensuring adherence to company safety, quality, and documentation standards. Job Duties and Responsibilities Install work‑area outlets (floor, modular furniture, wall), terminate CAT 3/CAT 5 jacks, mount face plates, surface mount boxes, and label in accordance with IES COMMERCIAL standards. Build and assemble closet infrastructure: backboards, cross‑connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optics, and other hardware. Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cables; complete IDC connections such as terminating 110/66 blocks and patch panels. Perform testing: continuity checks on horizontal and riser cable, use a volt‑ohmmeter, troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transposed pairs, and use a tone set. Identify active voice or data circuits. Lead a crew: provide training, coordinate personnel and timelines, and ensure project completion. Complete IES COMMERCIAL documentation—including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, and change orders—accurately and on time. Adhere to all company, customer, and industry quality and safety standards. Execute additional duties as assigned. Qualities & Responsibilities Must be self‑motivated, professional, and able to promote the company culture to employees, vendors, clients, and partners. Ability to act as a liaison with customer representatives. Physical and Mental Requirements Work at heights, ladders, and confined spaces. Lift up to 50 lb and move up to 75 lb. Good color vision, small‑print reading, and audible signal recognition. Travel within the branch or regional territory as required. Tools screwdriver (regular and Phillips), drywall saw, torpedo level, tape measure, snips (with belt sheath), pliers (needle‑nose and channel locks), hammer, cable stripper, flashlight, gloves. Punch tool with 110/66 block blade, tone set, 6/8 position combo crimp tool, and Krone/3M/BIX. Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements High School diploma or GED equivalency. Minimum 2 years in telecommunications or related technical field, with supervisory experience. Proficiency with listed tools and ability to interpret blueprints, specifications, and quality reports.
