#140034 (NNP) Neonatal Nurse Practitioner - Per Diem UC San Diego Health is a Magnet designated organization, which is a prestigious recognition that applies to only 10% of all U.S. hospitals. Magnet is the “gold standard” for nursing excellence and is based on strengths in five key areas, which include transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, new knowledge, innovation and improvements and empirical outcomes. UC San Diego Health has held its Magnet status since 2011. The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the School of Medicine, with approximately 171 Faculty Members, 60 postdoctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs), and over 300 support staff (excluding hospital staff). Additionally, the Department has 57 clinical residents and fellows, distributed across the Various Divisions. The missions of research, education, and patient care are intertwined and are integral to the goals of the department. The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner provides primary care for the high-risk neonate and participates in the development and implementation of educational programs related to the high-risk neonate and their family. The NNP functions from the time of birth of the high-risk infant through their discharge and practices in collaboration with and under the direct supervision of an attending neonatologist. The NNP plans and presents in-service education to large groups in the community and within the medical center, writes and implements policies and procedures for the care of the high-risk neonate, and participates in and may initiate research studies. Under the supervision of the Neonatal Director, the NNP directs the management of patient care for neonates by 4th-year medical students and orients and directs patient care for neonates by interns during their rotation. NNPs each manage a case load of critically ill neonates. They act as a liaison, collaborating with other departments within the medical center, community agencies, and consultants. Other duties include supporting the development of guidelines and employee and student orientation packets. They teach courses on various neonatal care topics to medical students and interns, lead formal patient care conferences, and lead rounds in the absence of the Fellow or attending. They also participate in external transports of critical newborns to the medical center and lead resuscitation efforts during high-risk deliveries. While not required, a cover letter is highly recommended when applying to this position. Minimum Qualifications Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program. California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification. NCC Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) certification. Must be able to see patients independently. Experience providing patient education and counseling, and developing and implementing long and short-range treatment plans. Skill in patient interviewing, obtaining a concise medical history, and acquiring pertinent data. Proficiency in documentation of patient conditions and outcomes.
