RN- Orthopedics (Inpatient)

Position Overview NT4 Ortho-Urology Surgical Unit is a 41‑bed unit specializing in acute orthopedic and urology surgical patients. The unit is DNV certified for hip and knee replacement surgeries. Patients include limb trauma and low acuity medical patients, and most regional trauma patients are admitted here because Carle is a level‑I trauma center. The nurse‑to‑patient ratio is 1:4‑6. The unit is located in North Tower 4 and works closely with physical and occupational therapists. Average length of stay is a maximum of three days, allowing staff to follow patients through the entire recovery process. Staffing resources include a full‑time educator, a part‑time educator, two nurse supervisors, a manager, and charge nurses. Key Nursing Skills & Equipment Wound vacs JP drains Buck’s tractions External fixators Lift equipment Orthotic devices (boots, slings, walker, etc.) Chest tubes Foley/IV/Mediport insertions Central line care and lab draws Nursing prioritization IV pumps PCA pumps Feeding pumps SCDs Telemetry monitoring Patient connection Sign‑On and Relocation Incentives Sign‑on bonus $10,000 with a 3‑year commitment Relocation stipend $5,000 for distances over 100 miles Relocation stipend $2,500 for distances between 50 and 100 miles BSN Bonus $2,500 Qualifications Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days – American Heart Association (AHA) Registered Nursing experience >1 year Education: high‑school diploma/GED or associate’s degree Responsibilities Performs all responsibilities and duties required by the unit in accordance with scope of service. Implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Maintains up‑to‑date and accurate documentation of nursing care. Completes initial assessment upon patient admission and develops appropriate plan of care. Implements plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. Modifies plan of care based on continuous evaluation. Takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting hazards and incidents. Communicates directly and privately with others when necessary to resolve issues. Offers constructive feedback to aid professional development of peers and collaborates with colleagues to expand knowledge. Identifies own learning needs and seeks appropriate solutions. Fulfills all departmental competency requirements. Completes annual education as required for DNV Hip and Knee Replacement Program compliance. Assesses orthopedic and medical/surgical patients on each shift. Educates patients on wound care, mobility, self‑care, medication management, care transition needs, and any additional specific needs. Coordinates with physicians and surgeon partners on patient care. Delegates and monitors interventions of the HCT staff. Sets up orthopedic traction and manipulates surgical traction devices for mobility and wound care. Manages wound appliances such as wound vacs, drains, pouches, and other urological devices. Compensation and Benefits The compensation range for this position is $38.93 per hour – $63.35 per hour. The actual compensation offered to a selected candidate will depend on experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked, and compensation model.
