About the Department of Psychiatry and BehavioralSciences Ourdepartment leads psychiatry education for the Dell MedicalSchool and its post-graduate programs train mental healthprofessionals to become 21st-century leaders in the fields ofpsychiatry and psychology. Clinical services provide informed,evidence-based care for individuals and families in multiplegeneral medical and specialty behavioral health settings with anactive and strong presence in community settings. About the Child and AdolescentPsychiatrist Position The Dell Medical School (DMS) Department of Psychiatry andBehavioral Sciences is seeking a board certified/board eligibleChild and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join the clinical faculty andserve on our community and school-based telemedicine programs andconsultation-liaison clinical team in Austin, Texas. We seek aphysician who will help the Department achieve our goal of workingwith community partners to develop clinical, educational andresearch initiatives that revolutionize how people get and staymentally healthy in Central Texas and beyond. Student loanforgiveness is available for faculty of the Department ofPsychiatry through the Texas Mental Health Professionals Loan Repayment Program. Additionally, DMS is a Health Research Institute (HRI) of the TexasChild Mental Health Care Consortium. The program and projects ofthe DMS HRI work to address the clinical needs of the programswhich address urgent mental health challenges and improve themental health care system in Texas for children, adolescents andtheir families. This position will provide clinical andconsultative care as a part of the Child and Perinatal PsychiatricAccess Network (CPAN and PeriPAN), a telephone consultation linefor physicians, Texas Child Health Access through Telemedicine(TCHATT), a school-based telehealth program and Child PsychiatryWorkforce Expansion (CWPE) projects for the Central Texas catchmentarea. We are also integrated in our local mental health communityclinics. Primary responsibilities will include providing clinical expertiseto evaluate and treat a broad spectrum of mental health challengesfor children and adolescents and in support of physicians who callthe Child and Perinatal Psychiatric Access Network forconsultation. The physician would also provide psychiatric care tochildren and adolescents as part of the Community PsychiatryWorkforce Expansion (CPWE) program. This program is part of recentlegislative funding to increase access to pediatric mental healthservices across Texas. We seek candidates committed to providing exemplary care andtreatment that restores hope and helps patients live healthier,fuller lives. A clinical assignment will occur through ourDepartment's collaborations with the Seton Healthcare Family withthe physician providing clinical care at a Local Mental HealthAuthority and/or Dell Children's Medical Center remotely. Essential Functions Treatment and Assessment: Leveraging knowledge and understanding ofchild/adolescent psychiatry, treats and assesses patients and/orphysicians (e.g., primary care physicians, family medicine doctors,etc.); obtains information through the clinical interview andinterprets age-specific responses to treatment; leverages knowledgeand understanding of psychosocial systems on treatment and agespecific psychopharmacology to the benefit of the patient. Offerseducation, clinical recommendations, and referral information toequip doctors to manage mental health cases in the primary caresetting. Treats patients, staff, and doctors with dignity andrespect. Meets productivity standards as developed by the MedicalDirector. Prescribes medication in collaboration with thepatient/guardian based on diagnosis and target symptoms, and incompliance with any applicable center formulary. Appliescost/benefit/risk analysis. Accounts for other medical conditionsin making medical decisions and collaborates with otherprofessionals as necessary. Complies with procedures foracquisition of medication through patient assistance programs.Provides ongoing in person and/or telemedical medication managementservices consistent with the standard of care and in accordancewith applicable guidelines. Evaluates and monitors effectivenessand tolerability of psychiatric medications. Provides patienteducation and ensures appropriate consents are obtained. PerformsAIMS and other assessments as applicable. Evaluation: Provides and appropriately documents in person and/ortelemedical psychiatric evaluations consistent with the standard ofcare and in accordance with any applicable guidelines anddocumentation requirements. Psychiatric diagnosis is supported byclinical findings. Orders lab work as indicated by patient need andin compliance with applicable rules and guidelines. Reviews labresults in a timely manner, and adjusts treatment asindicated. Documentation: Documents all services in a professional and timelymanner, using approved medical records systems and forms. Documentsall services within 24 hours of service delivery including theaddition of all documents and pertinent information betweenappointments, including phone calls, medication changes, andreferrals. Clearly documents rationale for treatment that deviatesfrom usual standards, such as polypharmacy, treatment of patientswith ongoing substance use, use of off label medications, change infrequency of lab monitoring, long term use ofbenzodiazepines. Emergency Evaluation: Provides child and adolescent psychiatricemergency evaluations and ongoing crisis services. Documents riskfactors and recommendations. Assists staff in developingappropriate crisis plans. Participates in treatment team meetings as indicated. Attends andparticipates in medical staff meetings, peer review, qualitymanagement activities, and other activities within the scope of aChild and Adolescent Psychiatrist and as assigned by the MedicalDirector. Sustains and cultivates team working relationships, andeffectively collaborates with treatment team members. Collaborateswith colleagues in the development of newservices/programs/affiliations. Works with clinic staff to maximizeaccess to psychiatric services and promotes efficiency and costeffectiveness of services The ideal candidate will demonstrate knowledge of, and comply withattendance, work schedule, on-call policies, centerpolicies/procedures, professional/legal requirements, and billingstandards; will maintain required training, licensure, andcertificates; demonstrate ethical, courteous, and professionalbehavior and communicate with staff and patients in a timelymanner.
