Position Overview

Join our team as a Registered Veterinary Technician who is responsible for all aspects of the Emergency department flow, including patient triage, history taking, performing diagnostics, patient restraint, administering and monitoring anesthesia in the pre-, peri-, and post-procedure periods, assisting in diagnostic and surgical procedures, medication administration and refills, discharging, and client communications.

Carolina Veterinary Specialists – Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a busy, multi-specialty and emergency hospital where a highly skilled team works collaboratively to provide advanced, compassionate care in a fast-paced and rewarding environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Properly maintain and operate all instruments used in the Emergency department
• Maintain a clean, organized working environment in Treatment and exam rooms, diagnostic areas and surgery suite by cleaning tables, mopping and disinfecting area and equipment.
• Receive incoming emergencies, triage patient and monitor vitals
• Accurate patient histories
• Communicate patient status to Emergency Doctor and other staff
• Perform or assist in diagnostic procedures including blood work, radiographs, ultrasounds, blood pressure and ECG monitoring
• Use appropriate precautions for patients with possible infectious disease
• Ability to properly restrain patients for examinations, diagnostics and procedures
• Ability to place catheters and draw blood in patients with compromised veins
• Properly prep and scrub patients for sterile surgical or diagnostic procedures
• Monitor patient parameters and notify doctor of potential concerns
• Take proactive role in life-saving techniques including CPR, as necessary
• Properly record patient vitals and trends on anesthesia flow sheet
• Proper handling of diagnostic specimens during procedure and facilitating the proper care including accurate testing and documentation
• Client communications according to hospital policy
• Medication preparation and administration
• Maintain the efficiency of the service by utilizing time management skills to recognize and complete tasks in a timely manner
• Ability to work efficiently under stressful situations
• Performs other duties as assigned

Competencies

• Familiarity with:
  • Specialty medications and disease processes
  • Jugular catheter placement
• Proficient in:
  • Above average venipuncture ability
  • Must be able to recognize a critical or unstable patient
  • Working knowledge of multiple ways of Oxygen delivery to patients in need including intubation and oxygen therapy procedures
  • Ability to set up and administer appropriate fluid therapy
  • Working knowledge of Emergency diagnostic tools including blood pressure monitors, ECG, and various hospital patient monitoring systems
  • Working knowledge of Emergency medications and dosing
  • Ability to monitor anesthesia in compromised or unstable patients
  • Knowledge of normal patient parameters
  • Knowledge of and care for all ER instruments
  • Knowledge of Emergency situations and terminology
  • Working knowledge and protocol for advanced like support procedures such as manual ventilation, Chest compressions, emergency drug and fluid administration
  • Must be conscientious of personal safety and the safety of those around them
  • Must work well in a team environment
  • Must be able to communicate well with other team members
  • Must be able to maintain good client communications during difficult and stressed times
  • Good time management skills

Qualifications (Required)

• Applicants must be 18 years of age or older to be considered for this position
• Must have at least 1 year of veterinary assistant experience (2-5 years relevant experience preferred)
• Must be a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)

Schedule: Full-Time, Day shift; Friday through Sunday

Pay Range

$21.06—$28.60 USD
