Patient Service Representative

Pay: $18.00 per hour
Job Type: Contract-to-Hire

We are seeking a professional and customer-focused Patient Service Representative to support front-office and patient access functions within a busy healthcare environment.

This is a contract-to-hire opportunity with the potential to transition into a permanent position based on performance and business needs.

The Patient Service Representative is responsible for coordinating and maintaining a positive customer experience while performing pre-registration, registration, scheduling, and business office functions. The ideal candidate will have excellent customer service skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Greet and assist patients in person and over the phone in a professional and courteous manner
• Schedule patient appointments for designated departments
• Use scheduling software to coordinate appointments and services
• Provide patients with testing instructions and appointment information
• Obtain required authorizations and referrals when applicable
• Complete patient pre-registration and registration accurately
• Interview patients and/or representatives to obtain accurate demographic, insurance, and billing information
• Update patient information in applicable systems
• Obtain required signatures, certifications, authorizations, and supporting documentation
• Verify insurance coverage using eligibility systems, insurance websites, and customer service lines
• Assist with Medicare Secondary Questionnaire requirements when applicable
• Verify medical necessity, referrals, authorizations, and other insurance requirements
• Help identify patient financial responsibility and collect point-of-service payments when appropriate
• Answer patient billing and insurance-related questions
• Maintain accurate patient records and documentation
• Communicate effectively with patients, physicians, clinical staff, management, and other departments
• Escalate issues that may impact timely and accurate completion of assigned tasks
• Follow all department policies, procedures, and system updates
• Maintain confidentiality and follow HIPAA requirements
• Support accurate and timely revenue-cycle processes
• Perform charge posting when applicable
• Maintain regular, consistent, on-site, and timely attendance
• Manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment
• Provide a positive and professional patient experience at all times

Qualifications:

• Previous healthcare, patient registration, scheduling, medical office, or customer service experience preferred
• Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
• Ability to multitask and work effectively with frequent interruptions
• Comfortable using computer systems and scheduling software
• Ability to communicate professionally with patients, providers, staff, and insurance representatives
• Knowledge of insurance verification and healthcare revenue-cycle processes is a plus
• Dependable and able to maintain consistent on-site attendance

Health & Compliance Requirements:

All contracted individuals must meet required health and infection control requirements, including:

• TB Screening: PPD/Mantoux within the past 12 months, or a 2-step PPD if more than 12 months has lapsed; QuantiFERON or T-Spot results may also be accepted
• Chest X-ray: Required when applicable based on positive PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-Spot results, along with related evaluation or treatment documentation
• MMR: Documentation of measles, mumps, and rubella immunity by physician, positive antibody testing, or 2 doses of MMR
• Varicella: 2 doses of the vaccine or laboratory evidence of immunity
• Hepatitis B: Immunization or HBsAb antibody testing when potential blood or body fluid exposure exists
• Drug Screen: UHG-standard drug screening completed within the required timeframe
• Annual Flu Shot: Required during flu season, September through April
