Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Operating Room Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Day Hours per Shift: 8.5 hours Experience: Minimum three (3) years of relevant nursing experience License: State RN License in good standing Certifications: BLS (American Heart Association) Must-Have: - Patient assessment - Nursing process - Nursing interventions - Patient care procedures - OR suite experience Description: The staff Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated time frame. The RN provides care to these patients via the utilization of the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, financial and human resources within the philosophy of the institution. Essential functions include performing all responsibilities and duties required by the unit as specific to the scope of service. The RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Maintaining up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided is essential to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team. The RN completes initial assessments upon patient admission and develops appropriate plans of care in accordance with unit standards, based on patient and family needs. The RN also implements plans of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. Modifying the plan of care based upon continuous evaluation is a critical responsibility. The RN takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents. Effective communication with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues is vital. The RN offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers and confers with colleagues to expand the knowledge base. Identifying personal learning needs and taking initiative to begin appropriate solutions is encouraged. Fulfilling all requirements of departmental competencies is expected. Department-specific job functions include preparing the operating room suite for patients, which involves managing supplies, equipment, medications, and other needs. The RN interviews patients using established identifiers (name and date of birth). Transporting patients to the appropriate operating room suite and onto the operating room table using safety precautions is essential. Performing timeouts upon entry of the suite, prior to incision, and prior to exiting the operating room suite is required. The RN appropriately positions and preps patients for procedures utilizing positional aides and guidelines. Supporting the surgical team during procedures involves responding to requests for additional supplies, blood, specimens, cultures, other medications, and dressing. Finally, the RN transports patients to the post-anesthesia care unit or a specific unit and provides handoff to the receiving nurse.
