Summary The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas is one of the largest in the nation, spanning 43 counties and 44,000 square miles and serving 8.3 million people from Houston to the Mexico border. The office offers a challenging and rewarding experience for highly motivated attorneys. This Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) position is located in Laredo, Texas. Responsibilities The selected AUSA will prosecute a wide range of federal criminal and civil matters in the Criminal Division, including organized crime, financial litigation, immigration, drug offenses, firearms, public corruption, asset forfeiture, and white‑collar crime. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as the attorney’s training and experience progress. Venue duties will include frequent courtroom appearances in both hostile and non‑hostile contexts, and the individual will be expected to develop and manage a substantial caseload under tight deadlines. Requirements United States citizenship or national status. J.D. degree (or equivalent) and current admission to the bar in any U.S. jurisdiction by entry on duty. Satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax, and drug testing. Registration with Selective Service for male applicants born after December 31, 1959, or documentation of exemption. Residence in the district or within 25 miles of the Laredo office. Preferred Qualifications Strong academic credentials, superior legal research and writing skills, rapid analytical ability, high‑volume courtroom experience, outstanding organizational, time‑management, and interpersonal skills, and a demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service. Preferred court experience includes first‑chair jury trials. Candidates should be computer‑proficient, self‑sufficient in preparing legal correspondence and pleadings, and able to work collaboratively with fellow AUSAs, support staff, and investigative agencies. Salary and Benefits Pay ranges from $79,718.00 to $197,100.00, based on the number of years of professional attorney experience and locality. The position includes a comprehensive benefits package: paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System. Other Information Relocation expenses are not authorized. Average travel is 1 to 5 nights per month. The position is open to all grades AD 21‑AD 29.
