Job Summary

The role of a respiratory therapist encompasses the evaluation, therapeutic intervention, and education for patients experiencing cardiopulmonary issues and/or sleep-related disorders. These professionals assess patients to prevent, identify, monitor, and manage diseases and their complications. They deliver therapeutic interventions aimed at improving both cardiopulmonary health and overall well-being, in alignment with established objectives and collaborative care plans.

Additionally, respiratory therapists educate patients to foster preventive care, self-management, and improved quality of life. They may also provide insights and manage data related to sleep-disordered breathing. Regular assessments of patients and their equipment are conducted to ensure optimal therapy adjustments. They collect and analyze blood and other specimens to evaluate levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases, as well as measure lung capacity to identify any impairments. Based on their analyses, they offer diagnostic results and treatment recommendations.

Qualifications

• A degree in Respiratory Care from an accredited program is mandatory; at least an associate degree or its equivalent as recognized by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
• Respiratory therapists must possess comprehensive knowledge of all procedures, indications, contraindications, and risks associated with respiratory care, along with familiarity with the equipment used in their field.
• Demonstrated proficiency in utilizing computers for patient documentation and data collection to ensure quality care is essential.
• Completion of orientations, competency validations, and other required training by the department and hospital is necessary.
• Current licensure in Respiratory Therapy in the state(s) of practice is required, along with multi-state licensure privileges as applicable.
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) must be obtained and maintained in active status according to NBRC standards.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is essential. Additional site-specific specialty certifications such as Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may also be required.
