Job Summary

Surgical Technologist, Operating Room Open Heart, Madison, WI. The Surgical Technologist supports complex cardiac, thoracic, transplant, and general surgical procedures in a high-acuity teaching environment. The role prepares the operating room, promotes patient safety, assists surgeons, and manages surgical instruments and supplies while working independently across adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient populations.

Job Details

• Required Qualifications: American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification; successful completion of a surgical technologist program or two years of experience in a Surgical Technologist role in lieu of program completion; two years of scrub experience; cardiac and thoracic surgical experience; kidney and liver transplant experience; tracheostomy experience; teaching hospital experience; Level I hospital experience; Trauma Level II experience; competency with complex cardiac and thoracic procedures, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG), ascending aortic procedures, left ventricular assist device (LVAD) procedures, thoracic surgery, lobectomy, mitral valve procedures, Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS), and lung resection.
• Schedule: Day and evening 12-hour shifts, generally scheduled between 10:40 a.m. and 11:10 p.m., with Monday-through-Friday variations; weekend call from 3:00 p.m. Friday through 7:00 a.m. Monday, with no Friday shift during the assigned weekend call period; orientation consists of two weeks of five 8-hour shifts from 6:40 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.; 36 hours per week.
• Additional Information: The Surgical Technologist prepares the operating room, promotes patient safety during surgery, assists the surgeon, and maintains instruments and supplies. The role includes solo scrubbing and requires the ability to work independently on complex cardiac and thoracic cases. Patient populations include adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. The position supports approximately 25 operating rooms and may involve a high-acuity, complex surgical environment.
