Engineering Manager

Advice & Wealth Management Technology (AWMT) builds platforms that advance how portfolios are constructed and how investment advice is delivered. We are looking for Engineering Managers to join our Advice Portfolio Construction and Wealth Management teams who will play an integral part in Vanguard's goal to grow and scale its Advice offering. In this role, you'll lead an engineering team enabling sophisticated investment techniques that support improved client outcomes, including support for more advanced investment products and a broader range of portfolio construction approaches. This role is ideal for a leader who enjoys flexing both deep technical expertise and people management skills while influencing the direction, evaluation, selection, configuration, implementation, and integration of modern technologies and tools. As an Engineering Manager within this team, you will lead agile, high-performing engineering teams delivering highly critical, rapidly growing cloud-native platforms that directly enhance advisor productivity and improve the client experience.

You'll partner closely with product and investment methodology stakeholders while helping your team grow their technical capability and investment acumen, working in a tight knit Dallas engineering community that values collaboration, problem solving, and bringing out the best in each other. You'll continuously apply modern engineering practices and leverage AI assisted engineering as part of the team's toolkit. Success in this role comes from strong judgment: making tradeoffs across cost, time, risk, and value while staying anchored to a long term vision. You'll help partners separate must have capabilities from nice to have enhancements, bring structure to ambiguity, and create the conditions for predictable delivery across a complex ecosystem.

What You'll Do:

• Hire, evaluate, and supervise crew. Provide guidance and training as necessary to develop crew. Set performance standards, review performance, and make informed compensation decisions in accordance with all applicable human resources policies and procedures.
• Deliver software releases relating to the product for the business units. Work with business clients to determine scope and develop environmental requirements for each project.
• Work closely with management to develop and implement staffing and operational plans. Participate in the development of short and long term department goals. Monitor and report on service delivery metrics and overall performance.
• Develop and implement changes to department policies and procedures to meet changing business needs and to achieve department objectives. Identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
• Lead quality initiatives to improve the delivery of service levels. Work with senior management in the planning, development, and execution of short and long range goals.
• Present status, metrics, and department initiatives at meetings with management and project peers. Maintain relationships with technical teams, IT, and business partners.
• Participate in the development of the department budget. Review expenses and ensure department operates within budgetary guidelines.
• Ensure staff comply with information technology and information security policies and procedures and verify that deliverables meet requirements.
• Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Minimum of eight years related work experience, with at least five years of project management experience.
• Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. Graduate degree preferred.
• Proven people leadership experience, including the ability to grow, develop, and support a team.
• Strong technical acumen with the ability to understand and interpret technical details.
• Strong expertise in IT project management, Agile methodologies, and SDLC best practices with experience in IT infrastructure, software development, and enterprise IT solutions.
• Understanding of how to appropriately leverage AI tools and practices.
• Understanding and management of key DevOps metrics.
• Proficiency in risk management, budgeting, and IT governance. Understanding of cybersecurity frameworks and IT compliance standards.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

Technical Skills

We have opportunities on our Trust, Client Experience & Alpha, and Portfolio Construction teams. Each with their own unique requirements.

• Trust: Java / Spring, Python, AWS (ECS, lambda, dynamo), vendor integration experience a plus.
• Client Experience & Alpha: Hands on experience with modern full stack development (e.g TypeScript, Node, React/Angular), AWS (ECS, lambda, dynamo).
• Portfolio Construction: Java / Spring, Python, AWS (ECS, lambda, dynamo), vendor integration experience a plus.
