Job Title: Grounds Technician

Job Description

This role focuses on maintaining attractive, safe, and well-kept outdoor grounds across a large campus. You will perform a wide range of landscaping and groundskeeping tasks, including lawn care, plant care, debris removal, and snow removal, while working outdoors in all weather conditions. The position follows a Monday–Friday daytime schedule, with on-call responsibilities during winter weather events.

Responsibilities

• Inspect assigned outdoor areas regularly to identify maintenance needs and ensure grounds remain clean, safe, and visually appealing.
• Perform litter control by removing trash and debris from lawns, gardens, walkways, and other outdoor spaces.
• Carry out leaf removal and general cleanup of landscaped areas and pathways.
• Perform lawn care duties including mowing, edging, fertilizing, and watering to maintain healthy turf.
• Conduct plant care activities such as planting, pruning, trimming, deadheading, and thinning trees, shrubs, and flowers.
• Weed gardens, flowerbeds, and other landscaped areas to maintain neat and orderly grounds.
• Perform string trimming and other detailed edging work around obstacles, borders, and hard-to-reach areas.
• Support periodic fertilization and pre-emergent weed control under the supervision of a licensed applicator, following all safety and application guidelines.
• Assist with snow removal by clearing snow and ice from walkways, steps, and parking lots during winter months.
• Be available on-call for winter precipitation events outside of normal business hours to help maintain safe access across the property.
• Operate lawnmowers, trimmers, leaf blowers, and other landscaping equipment safely and efficiently.
• Work collaboratively with Landscape Technicians on occasional group projects to complete larger maintenance or improvement tasks.
• Perform general labor and other groundskeeping duties as needed to support overall campus maintenance and appearance.

Essential Skills

• Ability to perform physical work, including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
• Capability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including rain, heat, cold, and snow.
• Experience or aptitude in groundskeeping, general labor, and lawn care tasks.
• Ability to safely operate landscaping equipment such as lawnmowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers.
• Reliability to work Monday–Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm and to be on-call in winter for heavy snow or other precipitation events.
• Attention to detail in maintaining clean, orderly, and well-groomed outdoor spaces.
• Basic understanding of lawn and plant care practices, including mowing, watering, pruning, and weeding.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Preferred verifiable experience in lawn care or gardening.
• Comfort working under the guidance of a licensed applicator for fertilization and pre-emergent weed control.
• Willingness to participate in occasional group projects with Landscape Technicians.
• Strong work ethic and ability to stay productive while working independently outdoors.
• Interest in learning more about landscaping, horticulture, and grounds maintenance practices.

Work Environment

This role is entirely outdoors, requiring comfort working in all elements—rain or shine, in both hot and cold conditions. You will spend your days across a university campus, ensuring that lawns, gardens, and common outdoor areas remain clean, well-maintained, and safe. The work is hands-on and can be physically demanding, with tasks that may involve soil, plants, debris, and snow, so you should expect to get dirty depending on the assignment. The schedule is Monday–Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, with additional on-call responsibilities in winter for snow removal and other weather-related needs, using standard landscaping and snow removal equipment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bloomington, IN.

The pay range for this position is $15.00 - $15.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
