Rush Memorial Hospital

PRN - Days

As Needed Basis

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday Rotating 7:00am - 4:00pm

A qualified anesthesia professional involved in the administration of anesthesia and related services as delineated by the clinical and nonclinical responsibilities described herein.

Knowledge & Experience

Skills-

  • Demonstrates current competency in the clinical responsibilities for which the candidate is applying.
  • Demonstrates ability to give and follow instructions accurately.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills necessary to interact with various levels of health care personnel.

Education-

  • Holds current state licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Indiana, and complies with any applicable state statutory or regulatory requirements concerning advanced practice registered nursing.
  • Graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor.
  • Is currently certified by the Council On Certification of Nurses Anesthetists or its predecessor.

Authority and Accountability

  • Insurable by an appropriate medical malpractice insurer for the limits required by this institution or state.
  • Extensive exposure to confidential information or matters.
  • Frequent contact with various persons or groups within and outside of the hospital including employees, department managers, physicians, patients, visitors and outside agency personnel.
  • Must be able to work with and communicate with different types of people.

Aptitudes

  • Must be able to prioritize, utilize critical thinking, and adjust to change.
  • Must be able to reason and use logical problem-solving skills.
  • Performs duties that require some latitude for independent judgment and initiative in handling situations out of the ordinary.
  • Must be self-directed, flexible and willing to assume additional responsibilities as needed.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT

  • Regular requirement to sit, stand, bend, kneel, crouch, and move intermittently; ability to keep your hand and arm steady; reach with hands or arms; finger dexterity ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects; talk; and hear.
  • Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
  • Speaking clearly and listening skills are essential;
  • Must be able to work under a moderate amount of stress.
  • Documenting/recording information entering, transcribing, recording, storing, or maintaining information in written or electronic form.
  • Coordinates and works with coworkers to accomplish task as needed or directed.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
  • Work is performed in a clean, well-lighted and ventilated building.
  • Could be subject to infectious diseases, cuts, abrasions, burns, and punctures.
  • Work schedule may vary.
  • Participates in call rotation schedule as assigned.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Reports to the Surgical Services Manager.
  • Reports to the designated charge nurse.

QUALITY ASSURANCE-KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Perform pre-anesthetic screenings, including physical evaluations and patient interviews, and document results.
  2. Select, order, or administer pre-anesthetic medications.
  3. Select and prescribe post-anesthesia medications or treatments to patients.
  4. Administer post-anesthesia medications or fluids to support patients' cardiovascular systems.
  5. Evaluate patients' post-surgical or post-anesthesia responses, taking appropriate corrective actions or requesting consultation if complications occur.
  6. Discharge patients from post-anesthesia care.
  7. Perform or evaluate the results of diagnostic test such as radiographs (x-rays) and electrocardiograms (EKGs).
  8. Manage patients' airway or pulmonary status using techniques such as endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, pharmacological support, respiratory therapy, and extubation.
  9. Monitor patients' responses, including skin color, pupil dilation, pulse, heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, ventilation, or urine output, using invasive and noninvasive techniques.
  10. Perform or manage regional anesthetic techniques such as local, spinal, epidural, caudal, nerve blocks, and intravenous blocks.
  11. Prepare prescribed solutions, and administer local, intravenous, spinal, or other anesthetics following specified methods and procedures.
  12. Respond to emergency situations by providing airway management, administering emergency fluids or drugs, or using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques.
  13. Select, order, or administer anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, fluids or blood products as necessary.
  14. Assess patients' medical histories to predict anesthesia response.
  15. Develop anesthesia care plans.
  16. Obtain informed consent from patients for anesthesia procedures.
  17. Select, prepare, or use equipment, monitors, supplies, or drugs for the administration of anesthetics.
  18. Calibrate and test anesthesia equipment.
  19. Disassemble and clean anesthesia equipment.
  20. Insert arterial catheters or perform arterial punctures to obtain arterial blood samples.
  21. Insert peripheral or central intravenous catheters
  22. Instruct nurses, students, or other staff on topics such as anesthetic techniques, pain management and emergency responses.
  23. Read current literature, talk with colleagues, and participate in professional organizations or conferences to keep abreast of developments in nursing.
  24. Request anesthesia equipment repairs, adjustments, or safety test.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

  1. Maintains effective channels of communication with other employees and patients.
  2. Takes appropriate action in problem situations to offset adverse effects.
  3. Projects a professional and positive attitude regarding the hospital.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attends 70% of medical staff meetings held during the year.
  • Attends mandatory in-service and educational offerings.
  • Observes hospital dress guidelines and wears ID badge.
  • Provides proper notification for absence and tardiness and is punctual for start of scheduled work time.
  • Maintains equipment assigned to department and reports malfunctions appropriately.
  • Participates in emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures and internal/external disaster plans and procedures in accordance with departmental responsibilities.

CONTINUOUS QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

  • Participates in the Continuous Quality Improvement Program (CQI) to meet stated goals and objectives of the CQI Program by:
  • Bringing potential problems to nursing leader's attention.
  • Assisting in data collection.
  • Suggesting solutions to problems.
  • Emphasizing, supporting and committing to CQI practices and processes.
  • Taking action to assure CQI within areas of responsibility.
