Husbandry Operations Team Lead

DEPARTMENT: Veterinary Services and Technical Operations REPORTS TO: Department Supervisor/Manager or above SUMMARY A high-level technical team leader with the expectation of independent functionality. The Husbandry Operations Team Lead will be involved in the daily oversight of animal care for a swine production herd and animals actively enrolled in research studies at the Grafton Production Barn site. The Team Leader will oversee all aspects of animal care, including feeding, cleaning, sanitization, training, as well as scheduling activities for associated staff. Salary range: $52,955 – $60,950 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Oversee a team of animal care staff, responsible for husbandry of all swine in a production facility as well as animals enrolled in research studies. Schedule and assist with cleaning and sanitization of all animal housing and support areas. Oversee the Animal Care technical team’s daily schedules, ensuring appropriate weekday, weekend and holiday coverage as well as communication with all the relevant teams. Maintain compliance with USDA AWA regulations, the Guide/Ag Guide, AVMA Guidelines on Euthanasia and AAALAC standards. Handle and restrain swine of various ages. Identify/notify/assist with resolution of issues related to animal care and housing (e.g., problems with lighting, temp, humidity, cage repair, light handyman duties, facility preventative maintenance, etc.). Assist with animal transportation, including coordination of shipping/receiving and driving a company-owned vehicle. Perform food consumption and clinical observations, as required. Order appropriate feed and coordinate bulk delivery, including feed for research animals. Replenish all PPE stations in the animal facility, hallways and other supportive rooms as needed. Perform weekly and monthly facility duties (e.g. eye wash stations, carcass disposal, filter replacement, maintain equipment/caging, etc.). Function as a Designated Trainer for various standard operating procedures, hold brief trainings on various topics twice a month to ensure general upkeep, communication and uniformity within the team. Assist, as needed, technical staff in departmental areas. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on organization and customer service. Work effectively as a team member and leader. Perform other related duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS: Education: High school or GED required. BA/BS in scientific field preferred. Experience: Minimum 3-5 years experience working in livestock breeding operations required and previous supervisory experience preferred. Business management and experience working in a research setting strongly preferred. Certification/Licensure: ALAT/LAT preferred. Valid driver’s license required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to perform laboratory procedures, which require talking, hearing, standing or sitting for long periods of time, entering data into a computer, using appropriate instruments, reaching with hands and arms, working in narrow spaces, and wearing safety equipment (Personal Protective Equipment) according to OSHA regulations and company standards. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to consistently lift and move at least 50 pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Animal facility and laboratories with moderate noise possible. Working with potentially hazardous/noxious devices (e.g., needles, scalpel blades etc.) and chemicals (e.g., anesthetic gases, formalin, alcohols, xylenes, etc.), animal odors and/or radiation. General office working conditions. COMMENTS: This position will require performing duties on weekends and/or holidays. Hours may vary.
