Job Details Job Location: Park Maintenance Facility – Vernon Hills, IL 60061. Position Type: Full Time. Salary Range: $21.63 - $26.39 hourly. Job Shift: Any. Job Category: Parks & Natural Resources. Reporting Reports to: Parks Foreman. Qualifications High school degree. Minimum two years experience in a similar position (preferred). Valid Illinois State Driver’s License (Class C) with a safe driving record. Valid Illinois Pesticide Operator’s License within six months of hire. CPR and AED certification within six months of hire. Essential Job Functions Operate Park District trucks, tractors, mowers, blowers, trimmers, overseeders, chainsaws, bed edger, hand and power tools. Build and clean restrooms. Refuse and garbage removal for parks and playgrounds. Provide turf care in parks – seeding, fertilization, aeration. Mow, edge and trim parks; blow off paved surfaces upon completion. Provide tree and shrub care – trimming, pruning, removal, planting, removal of dead and broken branches, chipping limbs for disposal. Apply pesticides for weed control. Complete work order repairs as assigned. Complete inspections as assigned. Lay out and line sports fields. Maintain path surfaces with chips and asphalt patch, etc. Provide snow and ice removal from paths, walks, drives. Work special events as assigned. Repair and/or paint park equipment, playgrounds, facilities, signs, asphalt, and district property. Make and maintain ice rinks. Recycle appropriate materials. Responsible for upkeep of park district equipment and tools. Respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day and work on weekends. Identify and notify supervisors of hazards in parks. Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the district’s risk management policy. Develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers through oral and written communication. Respond to internal and external phone calls, e-mail, comments, and suggestions in a timely manner. Promote the district to patrons, guests, and staff. Other duties as assigned. Safety & Risk Management Maintain working knowledge of general agency and departmental safety rules. Use material handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting or moving objects 50 pounds or heavier. Report any work‑related or patron injuries to supervisor promptly, same day the injury occurs and before leaving work for the day. Attend required safety program and in‑service education meetings. Correct unsafe conditions and/or report them to supervisor. Psychological & Physical Considerations Work closely with co-workers. Work around general population/park patrons in public areas. Work under supervision and direction of superiors. Exposure to chemicals (fertilizers, weed killers, cleaning materials). Regularly lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Vision required: close, distance, peripheral, depth, focus adjustment. Exposure to outside weather conditions with moderate noise level 90% of the time, including extreme heat, cold, snow, rain, ice. Protective clothing (earplugs, safety glasses/goggles, helmets, chaps, steel toe boots, gloves, overalls) provided. Accommodations Workers may use mechanical or manual assists for lifting above 50 pounds. Working in teams allows assistance with heavier activities.
