Detention Officer, Alamosa County Sheriff Department

Job Summary Routine work in the safekeeping of prisoners in the custody of the Sheriff at the Alamosa County Detention Facility. Oversees inmates during transport and in their quarters, testifies in court, and processes arrest/booking paperwork for detention and courts. Must have the ability to legally carry a firearm. Full time with full benefits. Essential Job Functions The following are illustrative of essential functions to perform duties and responsibilities of the job. Reasonable accommodations, as defined under the American with Disabilities Act, will be made when possible. Familiar with preventive, protective, and defensive tactics. Mediates disputes. Performs assigned duties. Responds to notices of disturbances. Conducts searches. Gathers evidence and interviews victims and witnesses. Testifies in court. Provides court security. Follows office policy and procedure. Studies applicable Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances. Attends education workshops. Maintains a working knowledge of arrestee rights, inmate supervision, and jail principles. Responsible for other duties prescribed by County Sheriff. Show up for work on time and ready to work. Required Qualifications Knowledge Knows the applicable Federal, state and local laws and ordinances. Knows preventative, protective and defensive tactics. Skills Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manual. Can speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organizations. Abilities Ability to efficiently communicate in English, both verbally and in writing. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to conduct proper searches with the completion of the Field Training Officer (FTO) Program. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to work schedule to meet all obligations of the position. Ability to work independently or in a team. Ability to follow the policies and procedures of the County and the Sheriff’s Office. Ability to meet the physical requirements listed below. Education and Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Valid Colorado Driver’s License Required. First Aid/CPR certification. Other No felony convictions. Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen, background check, and psych evaluation. Physical Requirements, Work Conditions And Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Employee must possess the physical ability to run for long periods of duration, if necessary, in pursuit of a suspect. Employee must also possess the agility to contain and apprehend the suspect once captured. Employee must be trained in the use of communication equipment, firearms, Electronic Control Board, stun devices, camera equipment, hand cuffs and leg irons, tactical equipment, bullet proof vest, PR24 Baton or ASP, restraint equipment, fire control equipment, and O. C. Spray. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
