Summary: Processes and issues routine and specialized medical/surgical supplies and instruments used in the care and treatment of patients.
Responsibilities:
- Maintains current knowledge of all reprocessing operations to include cleaning, inspecting, preparation, packaging, sterilization, transport, and maintenance of surgical instrumentation and equipment.
- Handles loaner instrumentation, new instrumentation, and disposable instrumentation.
- Transport of contaminated items.
- Demonstrates proficient cleaning and decontamination processes for instrumentation and flexible endoscopes.
- Demonstrates packaging, preparation, and sterilization of instrumentation with great precision.
- Demonstrates ability to operate the canister washer.
- Documents Reprocessing and Sterilization processes.
- Maintains Readiness of Emergency Code Carts.
- Reviews Doctors Preference Cards daily to prioritize workflow and assure case needs will be met.
- Promotes infection prevention.
Education:
• High School Diploma or equivalent required, any higher education from an accredited college will supersede this requirement.
Licensure/Certification:
• Sterile Processing Certification is required after one year of employment and maintained throughout employment.
Experience:
• One of the following:
- One year of Sterile Processing Experience in a Hospital Setting
- Sterile Processing Certification (CBSPD or HSPA – formerly IAHCSMM)
- Successful completion of a Sterile Processing Course to include 120 hours of clinical experience

• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, and others in a professional manner.
• Ability to grasp and support new concepts and changes promptly.
Valid NC Driver's License: No
If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
