Obstetrics (OB) Registered Nurse

An Obstetrics (OB) Registered Nurse in a critical access hospital (CAH) provides comprehensive, high stakes care to patients throughout the prenatal, labor, delivery, and postpartum stages, often operating in a "jack-of-all-trades" capacity. The OB RN must possess advanced skills to manage low-risk, high-risk, and emergency scenarios in a single setting, including cross-training to float to other departments like Medical-Surgical or the Emergency Department.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program
- Licensed in the state of Wisconsin and in good standing
- Active BLS
- Active ACLS
- Active NRP certification
- STABLE certification or required to obtain within 6 months of hire.
Responsibilities include:
- Follows the Standards of Nursing Care as well as the Nursing Process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation while delivering high quality patient care.
- Manage the full birthing process from admission to discharge, including triage of patients with pregnancy complications.
- Monitor fetal heart rates, track contractions, and assist physicians or midwives during vaginal deliveries and C-sections.
- Provide care for both mother and newborn, including lactation support, newborn assessments, and education on infant care.
- Act as a first responder to acute OB emergencies such as shoulder dystocia, fetal heart rate decelerations, and postpartum hemorrhage.
- Communicates an accurate, concise end of shift patient report in a timely manner
- Interacts with physicians regarding patient status on an on-going basis though SBAR format
- Work in other units, including emergency department nursing, medical-surgical care, or swing bed, and
- Must be proficient in using Epic for documentation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Monitors patient throughout (before/during/after) the labor
- Performs basic IV skills
- Knowledge of hemodynamics
- Administers pain medication as ordered
- Takes and records patient's vital signs, ascertains if problematic
- Reads fetal monitor & ascertains if problematic
- Identifies & manages life-sustaining physiological functions in unstable patients
- Cares for patients Pitocin, MgSO4 & continuous epidural
- Ensures patient is in proper position for delivery & all monitoring equipment is functioning properly
- Aids doctor during delivery and as needed
- Immediate care of newborns (clean, weight, etc)
Mother-Baby care responsibilities (but are not limited to):
- Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patients' (both mother and infant) care plans
- Maintains a comfortable, safe and clean environment for mother and infant Assists mother with her hygienic needs
- Checks mother for any post-partum bleeding
- Examines mother's fundus
- Inspects c-section incision (if applicable)
- Assesses mother's pain, if any
- Performs emotional status checks on mother, recognizing symptoms such as those related to postpartum depression
- Monitors bonding between mother and infant
- Provides mother with breast-feeding tips, Educates mother on sore nipple management
- Teaching mother bathing tips for infants
- Keeps track of all feeds and diapers
- Involves and educates family/significant others in implementing best practices for mother and infant care
- Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms
- Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting

- Med/Surg
- Swing Bed
- ED
Physical Requirements for the Role:
- Mobility & Stamina: Walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching (above shoulders and below waist) throughout the shift.
- Strength & Lifting: Ability to lift, pull, push, and support at least 2550 pounds, such as moving equipment, repositioning patients, or assisting with ambulation.
- Fine Motor Skills: Precise hand-eye coordination for tasks like handling syringes, inserting catheters, manipulating small equipment, and typing.
- Endurance: Ability to sustain repetitive movements (e.g., CPR) and maintain physical stamina for long shifts, often running between 8 and 12 hours.
- Sensory Abilities: Visual acuity (including color vision) and hearing to assess patients, monitor equipment, and hear alarms.
Work Environment:
The OB unit is a fast-paced, high-acuity environment with high emotional intensity where you will care for patients with diverse, complex, and rapidly changing conditions. The workload can be heavy, so we focus on creating a multi-disciplinary, team-oriented environment to ensure patient centered care. There is the potential for exposure to infectious patients, harmful physical agents, and hazardous or toxic substances.
