Process Engineer III

Job Overview Avantor is seeking a Process Engineer to be responsible for all phases of medium‑scale assigned process improvement projects at the Bakersfield, CA location. This full‑time position focuses on ensuring successful project completion within time and cost constraints and is responsible for implementing process improvements to meet quality standards. Responsibilities Provide technical process ownership to core manufacturing processes and develop process methods, equipment, and support infrastructure to optimize production rates, efficiencies, yields, costs, and quality performance. Develop new manufacturing processes and assess equipment adequacy to meet changing market and manufacturing demands. Identify new equipment and technologies to support continuous improvement and capacity expansion of core capabilities. Design, validate and commission new production equipment and tooling, monitor modifications and upgrades, and troubleshoot existing processes. Develop project budgets for the procurement of new equipment and technologies. Plan and schedule engineering progress on tenders and awarded projects, prepare progress reports, manpower and resource forecasts, and manage engineering time schedules. Lead process design and detail engineering, including process simulations, design calculations, process optimization, and equipment sizing and selection. Review client tender documents, specifications, datasheets, installation, start‑up, and validation of new process equipment and technologies. Interact with customers, internal team members, and vendors to develop process and equipment specifications. Prepare qualification reports, flow diagrams, and charts on research data and information. Maintain engineering records consistent with cGMP and ISO regulations for life science biochemicals and reagents. Plan installation, movement, and repair of equipment and utilities within the building. Develop and own an asset identification system for all manufacturing equipment. Implement and sustain reliability best practices to reduce unscheduled maintenance downtime and costs. Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality staff to monitor and improve plant efficiency, output, and safety. Optimize preventive and predictive maintenance programs, including safety, environmental, and quality critical process controls. Analyze downtime to identify chronic or sporadic failures and lead reliability improvement efforts. Conduct observations and measurements directly, and collect and interpret data from technical and operating staff. Lead Root Cause Failure Elimination (RCFE) processes to identify root causes and implement corrective actions. Develop and utilize key reliability metrics to consistently measure performance. Provide long‑range planning for facility and equipment needs, including capital and major repairs. Support manufacturing and maintenance efforts as needed by the operation. Develop engineering scope for equipment and review inputs for the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Manage multiple projects based on requirements. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering; MS or advanced education in mechanical, chemical, or industrial engineering preferred. Experience: 2–5 years in a manufacturing environment, engineering capacity involving chemical process design, transfer design input for manufacturability, and capital funds request preparation. Additional Qualifications: Applied engineering experience in a GMP manufacturing environment preferred. Familiarity with purified water systems, blending/drying process technologies, evaporation purification systems, and aseptic processing systems is a plus. Excellent communication, problem‑solving skills, attentiveness to detail, and flexibility to work on multiple projects simultaneously. Benefits Expected pre‑tax pay: $78,000.00 – $125,350.00 (actual pay may vary with experience and location). Location: Bakersfield, CA.
