Learning Resource Center English Language Specialist

Learning Resource Center English Language Specialist George Mason University – Fairfax, VA. This part‑time adjunct position supports operations in the Learning Resource Center (LRC) by providing ESL tutoring, assisting with resource management, administering assessments, and contributing to instructional material development. The role also serves directly‑admitted international students who need English language support. Responsibilities Provide English language tutoring across speaking, writing, listening, and reading skills to Academic English, Pathway students, international graduate teaching assistants, and other multilingual students. Sessions occur both in‑person and online. Create a positive, supportive tutoring environment and promote tutoring services. Track student progress and prepare timely reports on sessions. Assist with LRC operations, including managing use of computers, printers, library resources, and study areas by students, staff, and faculty. Serve as an evaluator of international graduate teaching assistant oral English assessments. Collaborate with LRC staff to offer English language workshops and supervised group activities (conversation groups, language labs). Contribute to the LRC bank of tutoring and teaching reference materials and resources. Attend regular LRC team meetings and other Center‑wide events as required. Required Qualifications Completion of a graduate program in Linguistics, Education, TESOL, English, or a related field. Previous experience teaching adult ESL students. Superior oral and written communication skills in English. Strong intercultural communication skills. Demonstrated proficiency with computer applications (MS Teams, Excel, Word, Canvas LMS) and ability to use technology to enhance the student experience. Strong background in phonology, phonetics, and pronunciation instruction. Preferred Qualifications Experience teaching pronunciation using the Color Vowel system. Experience working in a higher education setting. Accountability: The LRC English Language Specialist reports to the Assistant Director for Learning Support & Assessment, who observes one or more tutoring sessions and/or workshops each semester.
