Certified Surgical Technologist

Summary Works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse while delivering safe and effective care to the patient during the intra‑operative period. Provides technical care to the surgical patient as a scrub assistant. Interacts with patients and healthcare team members while maintaining surgical department standards. Responsibilities Maintain a sterile environment and practice aseptic technique. Use sterile gown and gloves from a sterile area away from the main instrument table to prevent contamination. Ensure integrity of sterile packages before dispensing onto a sterile field. Identify breaks in sterile technique and report them to the Circulating RN. Demonstrate the proper selection of instrumentation based on the scheduled procedure and verify the case cart for appropriate instruments/supplies before the patient enters the room. Prepare the surgical room with the Circulator utilizing the physician’s preference card and ensure all jackets are buttoned before dispensing items onto the sterile field. Ensure special supplies/instruments are available prior to the patient entering the room. Communicate to the Circulating RN any outliers preventing the scheduled case from moving forward. Utilize correct methods for cleaning and disinfection of instruments, preparing opened trays, decontaminating instruments, etc. Assist with positioning of the patient, maintaining correct body alignment, and using appropriate positioning devices, OR bed, and padding. Maintain proper body mechanics during transporting, moving, lifting, or positioning the patient. Communicate any immediate patient safety concerns. Accurately perform surgical counts according to established standards for preventing retained surgical items. Dispense appropriate radiopaque surgical soft goods onto the sterile field. Ensure all soft goods are returned in their entirety. Communicate immediately to the Circulating RN when sponges and towels used in the procedure are not radiopaque. Education, Skills, Experience Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program. Must have and maintain certification as a Surgical Technologist. Minimum experience: 0–6 months (1–3 years experience may be required). Working Conditions Manual: significant manual skills, motor coordination, and finger dexterity required. Occupational: significant occupational risk. Physical Effort: very heavy effort; may exert up to 50 lbs. force.
