Job Summary The Associate Director of Health Professions & Life Sciences Career Advising serves as Northeastern University’s dedicated career specialist for students pursuing medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, public health, biotechnology, pharmaceutical sciences, clinical research, and related disciplines. As a core member of the Career Education Center’s sector‑based advising team, the role uses up‑to‑date market data and AI tools to guide students from first‑year exploration through professional school application, fellowship pursuit, and full‑time offer negotiation. The position includes designing sector‑specific programming, maintaining employer relationships, and translating evolving hiring and admissions trends into actionable advising. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, health, or a related field (required). A master’s or doctoral degree in higher education, counseling, public health, a clinical discipline, or a related field is preferred. Health professions advising certification is a plus. 4–6 years of experience in career services, health professions advising, clinical or research recruiting, workforce development, or the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or healthcare industries. Substantive knowledge of health professions and life sciences hiring practices, professional school admissions, and pre‑med, pre‑dental, pre‑pharmacy, and pre‑PA advising pathways. Experience advising students or early‑career professionals in health or life sciences fields and translating complex industry dynamics into accessible guidance. Experience managing others, including coaching, performance management, and professional development. Proficiency with career management platforms (e.g., Handshake), labor market intelligence tools (e.g., Lightcast, LinkedIn Talent Insights), and pre‑health advising platforms (Liaison/AMCAS). Ability to build and sustain employer relationships with hospitals, health systems, biotech and pharmaceutical firms, research institutions, and public health organizations, converting them into internship and full‑time opportunities for students. Data fluency: ability to interpret employment outcome data, matriculation rates, labor market trends, and program metrics. Strong presentation, coaching, and interpersonal skills. Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities Sector‑Specialized Career Advising & Student Coaching Provide individualized advising and coaching to students and recent graduates pursuing internships and full‑time roles in health care, life sciences, and related fields. Guide seekers through industry‑specific job search strategies, resume development, interview preparation, and offer evaluation. Supervise 1–2 Assistant Directors, offering coaching, performance feedback, and professional development. Integrate AI‑driven insights on hiring practices into every advising interaction. Sector Programming Design & Delivery Design, deliver, and improve a calendar of sector‑specific programs covering industry exploration, networking, mock interviews, career fairs, and salary negotiation. Collaborate with faculty, student organizations, and employer partners to develop relevant content. Evaluate program effectiveness using attendance, engagement, and employment outcome data, and iterate accordingly. Employer Engagement & Full‑Time Hiring Pipeline Cultivate and steward relationships with hospitals, health systems, biotech and pharmaceutical companies, research institutions, and public health agencies to generate internship and hiring opportunities. Coordinate on‑campus recruiting and information sessions with the employer relations team. Track pipeline health, identifying gaps in sector coverage, clinical specialty representation, or geographic reach. Labor Market Intelligence & Data‑Informed Practice Monitor hiring volumes, emerging roles, compensation benchmarks, and geographic hubs in the health and life sciences sectors. Synthesize insights into programming, advising content, and student resources. Maintain sector‑specific employment outcome data, contributing to the center’s reporting cadence. Cross‑Campus Collaboration & Sector Representation Serve as the Career Education Center’s embedded expert and representative for the health‑science sector in cross‑campus partnerships. Build relationships with the College of Science, Bouvé College of Health Sciences, and other programs with significant health‑science interests. Participate in curriculum, advising, and student success initiatives, and represent sector expertise in team meetings.
