POSITION: CONTROLLER Joe Bland Construction LLC (JBC) & Central Texas Stone and Aggregate, LLC (CTSA) — Austin, TX (In-Office) Joe Bland Construction LLC (JBC) and its affiliate Central Texas Stone and Aggregate, LLC (CTSA) are seeking a hands-on, seasoned Controller to lead all accounting operations across our consolidated entities. JBC is a general contractor based in Austin, Texas, specializing in subdivision site improvements, utility distribution, road and bridge construction, and street paving. CTSA is a quarry and aggregate mining operation supplying crushed limestone and base materials throughout Central Texas. Together the consolidated entities generate more than $200 million in annual revenue on a combined asset base exceeding $130 million. This is a senior leadership role reporting directly to the CFO. It is a player-coach seat, not a pure manager seat. The Controller owns the numbers and also does the work, leading a tenured accounting team of roughly eight while personally driving the close, the audit, and the technical accounting. This is not a first-time Controller role and it is not a step-up from an assistant controller seat. Joe Bland is a family-owned business at an inflection point, professionalizing as it scales. The incoming Controller will lead the finance function through that transition, and will benefit from a structured handoff from a long-tenured Controller who will remain available through the first several month-end closes. What You Will Own in the First 12 Months Compress the monthly close. Bring the current three-to-four-week cycle down toward a 10-day close, with tighter controls and cleaner consolidations. Lead the ERP migration. Move the accounting organization off the current ERP onto CMiC, with go-live targeted for Q4, and become the team's primary administrator and power user of the new system. Build the bench. Develop the staff accountant and strengthen the succession depth of the finance organization. Support the institutionalization. Partner with the CFO and ownership on board formation, financial discipline, and readiness for future capital events. Key Responsibilities Financial Reporting & Close Lead all month-end and year-end close processes across JBC and CTSA, ensuring accurate and timely consolidated financial statements. Prepare and publish monthly financial statements and management reports for CFO and ownership review. Manage consolidating entries and intercompany eliminations across two legal entities. Maintain and reconcile the general ledger across both entities. Own revenue recognition under ASC 606, including percentage-of-completion (POC) accounting for construction contracts. Maintain and review WIP schedules, job cost reports, over/under billings, and contract profitability analysis. Fixed Assets, Leases & Debt Manage the fixed asset subledger including capitalization, depreciation, disposals, and GL reconciliation. Administer lease accounting under ASC 842, including right-of-use asset and lease liability schedules. Maintain debt schedules across all facilities, including amortization, covenant tracking, and lender reporting, and ensure ongoing covenant compliance. Tax & Regulatory Compliance Prepare and file monthly Texas sales and use tax returns. Coordinate Texas franchise tax filings with external advisors. Research and document technical accounting issues to ensure compliance with US GAAP. Audit & External Relationships Lead the annual external audit from planning through issuance, serving as primary liaison with CD Bradshaw & Associates, P.C. Prepare audit schedules and supporting workpapers. Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, lenders, and surety providers. Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable & Payroll Oversee A/R, A/P, billing, and collections, including contract receivables, retainage tracking, and trade payables. Review and approve payroll in coordination with the CFO and HR, and maintain internal controls around payroll approval and disbursement. Manage inventory accounting and cost of sales tracking for CTSA aggregate operations. Team Leadership & Internal Controls Lead a tenured accounting team of approximately eight: a staff accountant (direct), the AP team, the AR team, and a dotted-line relationship to payroll/HR. Coach and develop the team, delegate effectively, and provide performance feedback. Design, implement, and monitor internal controls across all accounting functions. Support the CFO on financial analysis, modeling, and ad hoc reporting. Serve as a resource to operations and project management on job costing, billing, and financial questions. Systems & Technology Serve as the accounting team's primary administrator and power user of the ERP, and lead the transition to CMiC. Leverage advanced Microsoft Excel for financial modeling, reporting, and analysis. Identify and implement process and system improvements. This is a technology-forward finance organization; comfort adopting new tools is expected. Qualifications Required 10 or more years of progressive accounting experience, with a minimum of 3 years in a Controller or equivalent senior accounting leadership role. Not a first-time Controller. Construction industry accounting experience, with deep, fluent command of percentage-of-completion (POC) revenue recognition, WIP schedules, and over/under billings. This is the primary gate. Strong command of US GAAP, including ASC 842 lease accounting and fixed asset accounting. Demonstrated experience leading month-end and year-end close and managing external audits. Experience with fully integrated ERP systems (construction-focused ERP such as CMiC, Viewpoint, or similar preferred). Advanced Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, financial modeling, and complex formulas. Proven ability to lead and develop an accounting team in a hands-on, player-coach capacity. Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. Preferred CPA license. Preferred, and tradeable for deep construction Controller experience. A strong non-CPA with the right construction background will be considered. Experience with consolidated reporting across multiple legal entities. Familiarity with construction lender covenant reporting and surety relationships. Texas sales and use tax compliance experience. Quarry, aggregate, mining, or materials operations accounting background. Compensation & Benefits Base Salary: $150,000 – $170,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
