Nurse to patient ratios are 1:5-7 on days and 1:6-8 on nights. Required certifications include BLS and an active RN license. PCT class can be taken to become PCT or a CNA is acceptable. Common diagnoses include pneumonia, UTI, altered mental status, GI bleed, alcohol withdrawal, and falls/weakness. RNs are required to titrate certain drips, except for cardiac drips. Common titratable and/or set rate drips include heparin, bumex, and lasix. There are charge nurses on each shift, who will take a patient assignment on day shift. If only one charge nurse is scheduled at night, they do not take an assignment. Nurse aides or patient care techs have a 1:10-12 ratio on average, but this may vary. Job duties include monitoring vitals, blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, applying heart monitors, bathing, feeding, toileting, turning, and positioning. Respiratory Therapy administers breathing treatments and manages respiratory equipment. RNs typically only monitor respiratory equipment. A monitor tech is located on a different level, reading and monitoring telemetry for patients. Nurses are not expected to interpret telemetry strips. Shifts are 7 AM to 7 PM for RNs and 6 AM to 6 PM for CNAs. There is no self-scheduling or block scheduling; the manager creates the schedule. Travelers are expected to be flexible with scheduling. There is a weekend requirement every other weekend and possible holiday rotations. Floating to other medical/surgical units may be necessary for lower acuity patients. Scrubs are navy blue for RNs and ceil blue for patient care techs. One day of unit/departure-specific orientation will be provided. The charting system used is EPIC. A BSN is not required for this position. There is no call or standby requirement.
