The selected attorney will work primarily in the General Litigation Unit of the Civil Division, representing the United States in trial and appellate courts across a wide array of federal and state litigation, including bankruptcy, civil rights, commercial, constitutional, employment, environmental, federal program, fraud, immigration, medical malpractice, patent, prisoner, social security, summons enforcement, tax, and general tort cases. Responsibilities will increase in complexity as training and experience progress.ResponsibilitiesRepresent the United States in civil cases, including but not limited to employment discrimination, tort law, immigration law, constitutional law, the Administrative Procedure Act, and FOIA. Defend U.S. interests, handle proceedings, prepare pleadings, conduct discovery, appear in court, and advise clients.RequirementsUnited States Citizen or National.Initial appointment conditioned upon satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing; continued employment subject to favorable background investigation.Registered for Selective Service, if applicable.J.D. degree and active bar membership (any U.S. jurisdiction).Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof.QualificationsRequired qualifications: J.D. degree, active bar membership, and U.S. citizenship.Preferred qualifications: Direct experience litigating civil cases in federal courts and/or a federal judicial clerkship.EducationJ.D. degree required.Salary and BenefitsAssistant U.S. Attorney pay is administratively determined based on professional experience. Basic pay range: $65,563 to $171,487. Locality pay: Alexandria, VA 33.94%; Norfolk, VA 18.80%; Newport News, VA 18.80%; Richmond, VA 22.28%.Benefits include paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, telework, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System.Relocation ExpensesRelocation expenses will not be authorized.TravelOccasional.Political Appointees (Current and Former)Employees currently or within the last 5 years holding a political Schedule A, Schedule C, or Non‑Career SES position must disclose this information.
