Summary The Miami VA Healthcare System (Bruce W. Carter VA Medical Center) Diagnostic Imaging Service is seeking an experienced and dynamic Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. The DRT performs routine to moderately complex radiographic examination procedures. These exams are achieved by using diagnostic x‑ray equipment such as fluoroscopic units, digital diagnostic units, portable units and C‑Arm equipment used in the operating room. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in both written and spoken English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402 (d) and 7407 (d). Education: Completion of a full‑time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post‑high school diagnostic radiologic technology program – evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree – accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or by other accrediting agencies recognized by the Department of Education. Certification: Must be certified in Advanced Radiology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). GS‑8: Experience: Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience equivalent to the GS‑7 grade level (for a total of 3 years of DRT experience). Experience must include independently performing a substantially full range of duties with occasional oversight for highly complex issues and providing services in specialized areas of radiologic technology and/or general radiologic technology services. Key Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Ability to check system operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines. Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed. Knowledge of the patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results. Ability to monitor the patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed. Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology – including cross‑sectional anatomy – recognizing unusual images and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest. Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre‑employment physical examination/evaluation as required by VA Handbook 5019, administered by VA Occupational Health. Physical demands include moderate lifting up to 44 lbs., carrying objects up to 15 lbs., frequent reaching above the shoulder, use of fingers, hands, and legs, use of cranes and motor vehicles, walking and standing up to 8 hours, bending and climbing, and the ability to hear whisper. The incumbent must be physically, emotionally, and mentally stable to efficiently perform the essential functions of this position without hazard to themselves or others. Paid Time Off: 37‑50 days of annual paid time per year (13‑26 days of annual leave – 13 days of sick leave – 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Perform computerized tomography of the head, neck, spine, chest, and body with and without the use of contrast materials. Prepare and administer contrast materials when needed for exams. Perform image reconstructions on advanced workstations as directed by the radiologist or as part of a given study; maintain proficiency on reconstruction techniques. Maintain records and files of exams performed on patients. Continuously review new developments in the field of computerized tomography to improve quality of exams utilizing new technologies available. Perform scheduled Quality Control scans and measurements as indicated by the computed tomography vendor. Ensure that images are successfully transmitted to PACS and are available for radiologic interpretation. Perform all exams using Universal Precautions. Properly identify patient images to avoid mistaken identity. Assure that procedure rooms are always stocked with necessary supplies, with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies. Perform digital radiography examinations of the entire body while ensuring that patients are properly attired and prepared before positioning them for the requested examination. Identify patient images using left and right markers or other applicable positioning indicators depending on the examination. Perform dual‑energy axial absorptiometry (DEXA) as ordered by providers for the evaluation of degenerative osteoporotic disease. Perform fluoroscopic examinations including but not limited to barium swallow, esophagram, upper GI, small bowel series, and barium enemas. Perform regular scheduled quality control images and measurements as indicated by the radiography equipment vendor. Perform other administrative and imaging duties in which the incumbent is trained and competent – as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday – Friday – 8:00 am – 4:30 pm (Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor).
