Respiratory Therapist - NICU - Night Shift

Overview Under the direction of a physician, the Respiratory Therapist (RRT) provides all respiratory‑care duties and functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team. The RRT sets up and administers routine and complex respiratory‑care procedures to patients across pediatrics, emergency/trauma, step‑down, adult critical care, pulmonary function, bronchoscopy lab, neonatal intensive care unit, and other specialty units using protocol‑driven care. The role includes critical and emergent care, airway stabilization, non‑invasive ventilation, and management of acute‑care ventilators for short‑ and long‑term ventilation. Schedule Three 12‑hour shifts, nights. Location: Javon Bea Hospital Riverside Hospital, NICU Department. Responsibilities Perform routine respiratory therapies to aid in treatment, diagnosis, and evaluation of cardiopulmonary status. Initiate, monitor, evaluate, and wean invasive and non‑invasive ventilation. Recommend ventilator parameters based on clinical assessment and laboratory values. Provide ongoing evaluation of treatment regimes, including medication delivery and oxygen administration, per physician orders and therapist‑driven protocols. Assess patients before and after medication, procedure, or device application; recommend therapy changes or discontinuation. Educate and document patient, family, and staff on therapies, medications, goals, and equipment. Document work timely and accurately in electronic medical records and departmental records. Set up, calibrate, and troubleshoot mechanical ventilators, non‑invasive ventilation devices, therapeutic bronchoscopes, and pulmonary function tests. Disinfect, assemble, maintain equipment, and manage departmental supplies. Perform emergency rounds, oxygen saturation checks, and oxygen titration per protocol. Operate under universal precautions, proper body mechanics, and sound judgment. Respond to emergent care situations; assist in resuscitation with chest compressions, airway management, stabilization, and ventilatory support per American Heart Association guidelines. Transport adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients on ventilators or critical care equipment to intrahospital procedures. Deliver developmentally appropriate care to neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients, attending to age‑related physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs. Assist in orientation of new staff, mentor employees, and serve as a resource for staff and students as needed. Act as charge therapist in the absence of the Lead Respiratory Therapist on a rotational basis. Engage in department or community projects, including obtaining additional certifications, participating in education events, performing QA & PI, and supporting Joint Commission accreditation. Maintain competence in specialty areas: pulmonary function testing per ATS standards, bronchoscopy assistance, NICU delivery and resuscitation, and NICU‑specific equipment and protocols. Conduct point‑of‑care blood gas and chemistry analysis and collaborate on quality control. Perform other duties as assigned. Education and Experience Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Care Program. Minimum 1 year of respiratory experience, including 6 months critical care. Certification and Licensure Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) accepted; must obtain RRT within 1 year of hire. CPR certification. NRP within 90 days of orientation for departments requiring delivery attendance. Illinois and/or Wisconsin Respiratory Care Practitioner license. Specialty credentials preferred (NPS, CPFT, RPFT). Other Skills and Abilities Good mathematical and interpersonal skills. Level of Supervision Work requires a moderate level of independent judgment along with good interpretative and interpersonal skills, with justification and accountability to Lead, Supervisor, Manager, and Director.
