About the Position

Job Title: Surgical Technologist 1 Profession: Surgical Technologist Specialty: Surgical Technologist Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12hrs AM Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 3 years minimum experience in Neuro, Uro, Ortho, General, and Robotics (Da Vinci Xi) License: BLS (AHA Only), CST (NBSTSA or NCCT) Certifications: BLS, CST Must-Have: 3 years minimum experience in Neuro, Uro, Ortho, General, and Robotics (Da Vinci Xi) Description: The Surgical Technologist 1 functions in the inter-operative phase of patient care to expedite surgical procedures under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. This position assists the surgical team through the use of equipment and instrumentation to ensure that the operating room environment is safe. The technologist ensures that required equipment is available and functioning properly. Discussions about any special needs with the surgeon occur before surgery. The surgical technologist scrubs in adequately for proper preparation of instruments before the surgeon arrives. The operative site is prepared by aseptically cleaning and, if needed, patient clipping. The instrument table(s) are prepared and maintained in an organized manner to avoid damage to instruments as well as incorrect needs or instrument counts. Damaged or incomplete trays are identified and discrepancies rectified immediately to avoid delays or injury. The operating room setup is arranged according to surgical procedure schedules. Sterile setup of instrument table supplies and equipment required for specific procedures is carefully selected, with only needed supplies opened. The proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies is ensured during procedures. Surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items are performed according to established policies and procedures. Anticipation of the needs of the surgeon and surgical team staff is critical. Sterile supplies and equipment are passed to surgeons and assistants during procedures. The surgical technologist holds retractor devices and acts to respond to the surgical team’s needs during surgery. Assistance is provided to the surgical team with draping and positioning the patient. Surgical specimens are received following specimen protocol and passed off the sterile field to the circulating nurse, verifying the source of specimens. Assistance is provided with the placement of surgical dressings to the operative site following the surgical case completion. Surgical instrumentation is disassembled at the end of the procedure, and sharps, fluids, and waste are disposed of appropriately. Soiled instrumentation is prepared for proper transportation to the decontamination area. Cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, maintenance, and preparation of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies for distribution are ensured. The operating room is cleaned following each case, and equipment is returned to appropriate storage areas. Policies for infection control, guidelines for perioperative practice, and other regulatory requirements are followed to assure a safe work environment. Proper orientation and knowledge of all equipment and instrumentation prior to patient use are ensured. Knowledge of infection prevention and regulatory sterilization standards is required. Knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to assist the surgical team with invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures is essential. Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are necessary for interaction with surgical team members. Occasional exposure to chemical or radiation hazards may occur.
