Registered Nurse - ICU

Summary The position is located at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the Acute Nursing Inpatient Division in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN) delivers fundamental knowledge‑based care to assigned clients while developing technical skills, providing high levels of monitoring and surveillance for vulnerable, unstable and complex patients who require comprehensive assessments, therapies and high‑intensity interventions. Qualifications English Language Proficiency – proficiency in basic written and spoken English is required for direct patient care positions. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by an accrediting agency (ACEN or CCNE). OR individuals attending a master’s level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor’s level degree may be appointed as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion. Upon achieving a state license – the individual may be appointed on a temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment after successful completion and graduation from the bridge program (ref. VA Handbook 5005 – Appendix G6). Graduates of foreign schools with possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration meet the requirement for completion of an approved school of professional nursing to warrant appointment as a nurse with an associated degree/entry level program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher than an associate degree requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. State, Territory or Commonwealth (including Puerto Rico) or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception – candidates who meet basic education requirements but lack licensure may be appointed at the entry step with a 120‑day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case‑by‑case basis). Grandfathering Provision: All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and performing the duties described in the qualification standard as of 1/29/2024 are considered to have met all qualification requirements. Grade determinations: Scope, education and dimension criteria are detailed for each grade and level in the online assessment. Level I – Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing with no additional professional nursing experience. Level II – ADN or Diploma with one year specialized nursing experience equivalent to Level I; or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional experience. Level III – ADN or Diploma with two years professional nursing experience (one year equivalent to Level II) or BSN with one year experience; or Master’s degree in nursing (MSN) with no additional experience; or Master’s degree in a related field with a BSN and no additional experience. Nurse II – BSN with two years professional nursing experience equivalent to Level III; or MSN with one year specialized experience equivalent to Level III; or Master’s degree in a related field with BSN and one year specialized experience; or Doctoral degree in Nursing or related field with BSN and no additional experience. Nurse III – MSN with two years specialized nursing experience one of which is equivalent to Nurse II; or Master’s degree in a related field with BSN and two years specialized nursing experience; or Doctoral degree in Nursing with one year specialized experience; or Doctoral degree in a related field with BSN and one year specialized experience. *Note: Foreign education programs/degrees are not creditable as related degrees. Reference: Physical requirements: The RN’s physical and mental status must enable them to perform all duties under normal and emergent conditions, encompassing a comprehensive consideration of physical, mental and emotional ability relative to realistic duties. Duties Position located in the Inpatient/Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The Critical Care RN is responsible for providing and supervising quality nursing care to a mixed veteran population of varying complexity in the Acute Nursing Care Division. Requires professional competency, cognitive competency, interpersonal skills and knowledge of critical care patterns to care for patients at high risk for life‑threatening problems. Utilizes the nursing process to assess, diagnose and treat a highly vulnerable, unstable and complex population requiring intense and vigilant care.
