Substitute School Nurse (Grades 9-12)

School Nurse Position

Position Purpose: To promote health and safety in the school environment and provide health services to students, faculty and staff; to assist with the teaching of sound health practices

Essential Functions:

• Reports to the office upon arrival at school
• Checks for messages or materials requiring immediate attention
• Requests clarification of school rules and procedures if necessary
• Arrives in the Nurse's Office on schedule to greet students and remains in the assigned area classroom so that students are effectively supervised
• Maintains the established routines and procedures of the school nurse's office
• Supports the other school nurses
• Provides emergency care in case of sudden illness and administers first-aid in case of injury to students or staff according to established policies and procedures
• Notifies Principal or his/her designee to arrange for immediate examination of any pupil who appears to be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs
• Performs other duties within the scope of his/her employment and certification as may be assigned

Equipment:

• Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements:

• Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:

• Works in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile:

• Valid New Jersey School Nurse Substitute Certificate
• Demonstrated expertise in school health nursing practice and emergency procedures
• Knowledge of child growth and development, community and family dynamics, current health issues and wellness education
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Knowledge of community health and social services resources and ability to communicate effectively with nonschool health professionals and social service agencies
• Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
• Education: Must have RN License
• Experience: Successful prior substitute nursing experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
