Registered Nurse- Inpatient Mental Health

Overview This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Award amount up to $200,000 and eligibility period one to five years are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications English language proficiency in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a professional nursing school approved by an accrediting body (ACEN, CCNE) or an individual in a master’s level bridge program who has completed equivalent coursework. State licensure as a registered nurse (RN) or, for graduate nurse technicians, entry step appointment on a temporary basis while pursuing licensure. Foreign graduates must possess a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration from a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia and, if holding a degree higher than an associate, a valid foreign degree equivalency validation accepted by VA. Grade determination aligned to scope and dimension criteria. Candidates must meet the education and practice requirements for the applicable grade (Nurse I Level I–III, Nurse II, or Nurse III) as outlined in the qualification standard. Physical requirements: candidates must participate in a pre‑employment examination or evaluation as part of the hiring process. Responsibilities Provide and lead the provision of competent, evidence‑based psychiatric mental health nursing care, including patient‑centered, recovery‑oriented care and milieu management. Assume responsibility for all elements of the nursing process when providing and supervising direct patient care. Coordinate patient education, self‑management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care. Administer medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to influence care outcomes. Facilitate shift reports, warm hand‑offs, and nurse‑led psychoeducational groups. Use therapeutic communication and de‑escalation techniques; participate actively in the mental health interdisciplinary treatment team, MH Environment of Care rounds, and psychiatric emergency reporting. Apply Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior (PMDB) levels I‑III and utilize de‑escalation methods. Handle multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment with frequent interruptions while maintaining clear, concise communication. Deliver self‑directed professional nursing practice using the nursing process for complex patients. Benefits Competitive salary with regular salary increases and potential for performance awards.
