Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Personal Attendant reports directly to the SLS and/or AST Supervisor and/or Program Director and is responsible for the daily direct supervision of children and/or adults with developmental disabilities. Duties of a personal attendant include supervising, feeding, and dressing a child or person who needs assistance due to advanced age, physical disability, or mental deficiency. Duties also include but not limited to the following:

Job Duties:

• Employment Preparation (provide supervision to the individual while acquiring skills necessary for successful employment. This includes supporting the individual with personal appearance/hygiene, screening/application/interview process, building a network, preparing a resume, time management, communication, working under direct supervision and safety awareness)
• Communication Skills (provide supervision to the individual while accessing facilitated communication devices which may include Braille, Sign Language, finger spelling, augmentative devices, development of adaptations as per choice, mannerism, etc. Provide training and supervision on how to use a telephone, cell phone, internet, etc.)
• Mobility Training (provide supervision and training to the individual on how to access public transportation, familiarizing themselves with bus routes, DMV materials, obtaining bus passes, etc.)
• Education Training (provide supervision and training on how to enroll in classes, apply for financial aid, school/class selection, maintain attendance, complete assignments, encourage, etc. Training may include parent skills, family life education and sexual education)
• Money Management (provide supervision and training how to budget, make change, purchase, count, comparisons)
• Self Help Skills (provide supervision and train individuals in basic hygiene tasks and at times tend to individual with bathing and assist the individuals with proper dressing for weather and environment)
• Environmental Awareness and Public Adaptation (provide supervision and training on how to safely and confidently access public professionals, develop natural supports in all settings)
• Personal and Public Safety Skills (provide supervision and training in recognizing stranger danger safety skills, recognition of safe vs. unsafe environments, street safety skills)
• Emergency Preparedness (provide supervision and training on how to remain safe in the event of an emergency such as fire, earthquake, and any other emergency. Promote awareness of the use and purpose of 911 and emergency services)
• Community Resources Awareness (provide supervision and support in most advantageous access of all possible public/community resources)
• Health and Fitness (provide supervision, training and support with diet programs, exercise, medical conditions, making healthy food choices, etc.)
• Health Assistance and Medication (provide supervision and support for individual during medical appointments by communicating updates or concerns regarding health and/or medication. Also, provide supervision, training and support to individual with following proper storage, documentation and procedures for medication. Personal Attendant will NOT administer medication at any point.)
• Health and Nutrition Skills (provide supervision and training to individual with following recommendation diet and nutrition needs. At times, personal attendant will help individual with feeding by providing hand over hand supervision.)
• Home Maintenance (provide supervision and training to individual on maintaining a safe and clean-living environment. Also, able to provide support on completing necessary laundry tasks.)
• Self-Advocacy Skills (provide supervision and support to the individual with becoming aware of their rights, identifying when their rights are being violated, use of legal rights, self-reliance, self-esteem, empowerment, etc.)
• Living Options (provide supervision and training to individual on making choices on living location, living alone or having roommates, cost of living, etc.)
• Benefit Planning (provide supervision and training of individual while accessing Medi-Cal benefits, applying for SSI, Medi-Cal, assist and train the individual how to make appointments, cancel appointments, attend appointments, Immigration/citizen process, etc.)
• Shopping skills (provide supervision and support with shopping for groceries in the community. Personal attendant will support individual in making healthy food choices and assist with budgeting and price comparison)

Qualifications

Safety:

• Report Special Incidents (SIR) according to Regional Center and Inclusion's policy and procedures.
• Ensure that the individual receives professional, quality services in a safe and meaningful manner.
• Assist with the transferring of the individual from wheelchair to vehicle, restroom, bed and vice/versa when, and if necessary.
• Must have back pack and company ID badge with you at all times (provided by ISSLS).
• Follow proper emergency procedures while maintain the safety of the individual at all times.
• Practice safe driving while abiding to the California laws such as speed limits, pulling over to text or make/take a call.
• Supervision and devote your time to the individual(s) at all times including while on various outings.

Programming:

• Participate in development of the individual program plan (IPP), and or individual service plan (ISP)and or individual educational plan (IEP).
• Monitors services and individuals progress in relationship to establish goals and objectives per individuals plans.
• Provide supervision and training as outlined in the individual's IPP, ISP, and or IEP.
• Attends team meetings or other trainings as part of continuation of education or any agency-wide training and in-service programs
• Participates or provides information in individuals quarterly/semi-annual and annual meetings
• Research and plan activities for each of your individual(s) according to their goals/objectives in the ISP, IEP and IPP.

Communication:

• Communicate with supervisor during normal business hours regarding questions and concerns related to employment, hours, rates, individual's family, programs, etc.
• Communicate all emergencies and/or call-offs immediately to the department On-Call phone.
• Must have a working cell phone at all times and it must be ON during work hours.
• Must respond to management within a reasonable amount of time during work hours via call or text.

Documentation:

• Must submit accurate time-sheets on Payroll system daily including a signature from either the client, caregiver or authorized person above the age of 18.
• Must complete daily notes and other documentation as assigned. Documentation must be submitted daily and/or by end of the pay period.
• Must submit all mileage/expense reimbursements during the working shift, no later than the end of the working shift.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Must perform other related duties and assignments as required.
• Must complete 12 hours of Continue Educational Units (CEU) on an annual basis. Trainings scheduled on a monthly basis at Corporate office and/or reporting office.
• Must submit requirements and have current requirements active and up to date (First Aid, CPR, CPI, Car Insurance and Registration, and Driver License, etc.)
• Must punch in and out for assigned shifts in a timely manner during work hours via payroll system.
• Provide transportation for individuals on an as needed basis. Must maintain a clean and safe vehicle while transporting individuals.

Qualifications and skills:

• Ability to lift, push or carry up to 25pounds.
• At least 6 months direct supervision in the field of working with individuals with developmental disabilities population.
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret general regulations.
